Pinpoint Test I: The Washer Pump is Inoperative
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 81, Wipers and Washers for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
During normal operation, the wiper/washer switch receives voltage to operate the washer pump system from circuit 15-KA19 (GN/OG). Ground is provided to the wiper/washer switch through circuit 31-KA19 (BK). When the wiper/washer switch is at rest, voltage is supplied to both sides of the washer pump through circuits 32-KA34 (WH/BK) and 33-KA34 (YE/BK). When the windshield wash position is selected, the wiper/washer switch provides a ground path to the washer pump through circuit 33-KA34 (YE/BK). If equipped with a rear wiper system, when rear wash is selected, the wiper/washer switch provides ground to the washer pump through circuit 32-KA34 (WH/BK) and the washer pump operates in the reverse direction to direct fluid to the rear window(s).
- DTC B2114 (Front Washer Input Short to Ground) - Sets when the wiper/washer switch is in the windshield WASH position (or circuit is shorted to ground) during on-demand self test.
- DTC B2115 (Rear Washer Input Short to Ground) - Sets when the wiper/washer switch is in the rear WASH position (or circuit is shorted to ground) during on-demand self test.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Wiper/washer switch
- Washer pump
PINPOINT TEST I: THE WASHER PUMP IS INOPERATIVE
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
-------------------------------------------------
I1 CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE WASHER PUMP
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Washer Pump Motor C1397 .
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between washer pump motor C1397-1, circuit 32-KA34 (WH/BK), harness side and ground; and between washer pump motor C1397-2, circuit 33-KA34 (YE/BK), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to I4.
No
GO to I2.
-------------------------------------------------
I2 CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE WIPER/WASHER SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Wiper/Washer Switch C2081 .
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between wiper/washer switch C2081-10, circuit 15-KA19 (GN/OG), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to I3.
No
VERIFY the Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse 180 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. Diagrams By Number
-------------------------------------------------
I3 CHECK THE WIPER/WASHER SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Carry out the Wiper/Washer Switch Component Test.
- Did the wiper/washer switch pass the component test?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 32-KA34 (WH/BK) or 33-KA34 (YE/BK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to Steering Column. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
I4 CHECK THE WIPER/WASHER SWITCH OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Verify the wiper/washer switch operation.
- For an inoperative windshield washer pump, press and hold the wiper/washer switch in the windshield WASH position while measuring the resistance between washer pump motor C1397-2, circuit 33-KA34 (YE/BK), harness side and ground.
- For an inoperative rear washer pump, press and hold the wiper/washer switch in the rear WASH position while measuring the resistance between washer pump motor C1397-1, circuit 32-KA34 (WH/BK), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the washer pump motor and ground when the wiper/washer switch is in the WASH position?
Yes
INSTALL a new washer pump motor. REFER to Washer Pump and Reservoir Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to I5.
-------------------------------------------------
I5 CHECK CIRCUIT 31-KA19 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: Wiper/Washer Switch C2081 .
- Measure the resistance between wiper/washer switch C2081-8, circuit 31-KA19 (BK), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to Steering Column. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
