Diagnostic Overview

The Rain Sensitive Wipers Do Not Operate

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 81, Wipers and Washers for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

REFER to Rain Sensitive Wipers Wipers and Washers - Front.

When an inoperative condition exists in the rain sensitive wiper system (or if the rain sensitive wiper feature is not enabled through the message center), the rain sensitive wiper system defaults to the normal intermittent (dwell time) settings.

DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) Fault Trigger Conditions

Pinpoint Test

1. CHECK FOR SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)

1. Ignition ON.

2. Using a scan tool, perform SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) self-test.

Are any SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) present?

2. VERIFY THE RAIN SENSITIVE WIPER FEATURE IS ENABLED IN THE VEHICLE MESSAGE CENTER

1. Verify the rain sensitive wipers are enabled through the message center. For additional information, refer to the Owner's Literature.

Is the rain sensitive wiper feature enabled in the message center?

3. CHECK THE WIPER/WASHER SWITCH PIDs (Parameter Identifications)

1. Using a scan tool, view SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. While cycling through all auto/intermittent wiper/washer switch positions, verify the status of each SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications) changes state:

- Front Wiper Select Switch A (F_WIP_INT_D1)

- Front Wiper Select Switch B (F_WIP_INT_D2)

- Front Wiper Select Switch C (F_WIP_INT_D3)

- Front Wiper Intermittent Data 4 (F_WIP_INT_D4)

- Front Wiper Intermittent Data 5 (F_WIP_INT_D5)

Do all of the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) change state when the wiper/washer switch is cycled through the auto/intermittent wiper positions?

4. VERIFY THE RAIN SENSOR IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY

1. Ignition OFF.

2. From the outside of the vehicle, inspect the area of the windshield glass where the rain sensor is mounted. The rain sensor contact area should appear black, with no bubbles or air pockets.

Is the rain sensor installed correctly?

5. CHECK FOR WINDSHIELD DAMAGE

1. INSPECT the windshield glass for any cracks, pits, or other visible damage around the area of the rain sensor.

Is there any damage to the windshield around the area of the rain sensor?

6. CHECK FOR WINDSHIELD GLASS STREAKING

1. Ignition ON.

2. Turn the wiper/washer switch to the LOW speed position while applying water to the windshield surface. Observe the wipe quality, especially around the area of the rain sensor.

Is any streaking present on the windshield around the area of the rain sensor?

7. CHECK THE WIPER BLADE CONDITION

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Clean the windshield glass with glass cleaner.

3. Clean the wiper blades with isopropyl alcohol swabs. Wipe the entire length of the wiper blades.

4. Ignition ON.

Was there a noticeable improvement in the wipe quality after cleaning the glass and wiper blades?

8. CHECK THE RAIN SENSOR

1. Ignition ON.

2. Turn the wiper/washer switch to the auto/intermittent 5 position (most sensitive to moisture) while applying water to the windshield surface. Observe the wiper operation.

Do the wipers operate when water is applied to the windshield surface?

9. CHECK THE RAIN SENSOR VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: Rain Sensor.

3. Ignition ON.

4. Measure:

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

10. CHECK THE RAIN SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

11. CHECK THE LIN (Local Interconnect Network) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

12. CHECK THE RAIN SENSOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION

1. Connect: Windshield Wiper Motor.

2. Inspect the rain sensor connector.

3. Repair:

- corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins)

- damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins

- pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary

4. Reconnect the rain sensor connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

5. Ignition ON.

6. Turn the wiper/washer switch to the auto/intermittent 5 position (most sensitive to moisture) while applying water to the windshield surface. Observe the wiper operation.

Do the wipers operate when water is applied to the windshield surface?
