Pinpoint Test A: The Wipers are Inoperative - Front

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 81, Wipers and Washers for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

The front windshield wiper motor receives ground through circuit 31-KA9 (BK). The wiper/washer switch is grounded through circuit 91-KA12 (BK/WH). The front windshield wiper motor receives power from the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) or the front wiper relay through circuits 32-KA10 (WH/GN) or 32-KA11 (WH/BK) depending on the wiper/washer switch position.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Wiper/washer switch
- Windshield wiper motor
- GEM

PINPOINT TEST A: THE WIPERS ARE INOPERATIVE - FRONT

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

-------------------------------------------------
A1 CHECK FRONT WIPER POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Front Wiper Relay .
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between front wiper relay socket pin 2, circuit 31-KA12 (BK) and ground; and between front wiper relay socket pin 5, circuit 15-KA1 (GN/BU) and ground.

- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
GO to A2.

No
VERIFY the Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse 146 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. Diagrams By Number

-------------------------------------------------
A2 CHECK THE WIPER MOTOR GROUND CIRCUIT

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 .
- Measure the resistance between windshield wiper motor C125-3, circuit 31-KA9 (BK), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to A3.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
A3 CHECK THE WIPER/WASHER SWITCH

- Disconnect: Wiper/Washer Switch C2081 .
- Carry out the Wiper/Washer Switch Component Test.
Refer to Wiper Switch for component testing.

- Did the wiper/washer switch pass the component test?

Yes
GO to A4.

No
INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to Steering Column Switches Steering Column Multifunction Switch. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
A4 CHECK THE WIPER/WASHER SWITCH GROUND

- Measure the resistance between wiper/washer switch C2081-3, circuit 91-KA12 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to A5.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
A5 CHECK FOR CORRECT WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OPERATION

- Inspect the windshield wiper motor connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- Connect the windshield wiper motor connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to Wiper Motor - Windshield Wiper Motor - Windshield. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
