Pinpoint Test B: The Rear Window Wipers Are Inoperative - LH and RH Rear
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 81, Wipers and Washers for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
Voltage is supplied to the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) for the rear wiper system through circuit 15-KA28 (GN/BU). When rear wiper operation is requested by the wiper/washer switch, a ground signal is sent to the GEM through circuit 91S-KA35 (BK/BU). The GEM then supplies voltage to both rear wiper motors through circuit 32-KA28 (WH/RD). The rear wiper motors receive ground through circuit 31-KA28 (BK).
- DTC B1611 (Wiper Rear Mode Select Switch Circuit Failure) - Rear wiper switch ground input not seen during wiper on-demand self test.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Wiper/washer switch
- GEM
PINPOINT TEST B: THE REAR WINDOW WIPERS ARE INOPERATIVE - LH AND RH REAR
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
-------------------------------------------------
B1 CHECK THE REAR WIPER POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: GEM C201A .
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between GEM C201A-7, circuit 15-KA28 (GN/BU), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to B2.
No
VERIFY the Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse 180 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. Diagrams By Number
-------------------------------------------------
B2 CHECK THE REAR WIPER SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: GEM C201C .
- While operating the wiper/washer switch to the rear wipe position, measure the resistance between GEM C201C-14, circuit 91S-KA35 (BK/BU), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the GEM and ground when the wiper/washer switch is in the rear wipe position; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the GEM and ground when the wiper/washer switch is moved out of the rear wipe position?
Yes
GO to B4.
No
GO to B3.
-------------------------------------------------
B3 CHECK THE WIPER/WASHER SWITCH
- Disconnect: Wiper/Washer Switch C2081 .
- Carry out the Wiper/Washer Switch Component Test.
Refer to Wiper Switch for component testing.
- Did the wiper/washer switch pass the component test?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 91S-KA35 (BK/BU) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to Steering Column Switches Steering Column Multifunction Switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
B4 CHECK CIRCUIT 32-KA28 (WH/RD) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: LH Rear Wiper Motor C476 .
- Measure the resistance between GEM C201A-5, circuit 32-KA28 (WH/RD), harness side and LH rear wiper motor C476-1, circuit 32-KA28 (WH/RD), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to B5.
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
B5 CHECK FOR CORRECT GEM MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect the GEM electrical connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- Connect the GEM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Reconnect all the wiper system components.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new GEM. Service and Repair TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
