Active Grille Shutter System
Pinpoint Tests
Pinpoint Test A: The Grille Shutter Is Inoperative Or Does Not Operate Correctly
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 33, Cooling Fan for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation
The grille shutter actuator receives fused battery voltage from the Battery Junction Box (BJB). When the engine is started, the actuator carries out a calibration test that can take up to 20 seconds to complete. During this calibration test the actuator moves the shutters through their complete range of motion from full open to full close. If the actuator cannot reach either position, cannot move at all, senses low voltage input or detects an internal short or open, the actuator sends a message to the PCM over a Local Interconnect Network (LIN) indicating a fault. After receiving a fault message for a predetermined amount of time, the PCM sets a DTC.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Grille shutter actuator
- Grille shutter assembly
- PCM
PINPOINT TEST A : THE GRILLE SHUTTER IS INOPERATIVE OR DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY
NOTICE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
A1 CHECK FOR PCM DTCs
- Review the DTCs retrieved during Inspection and Verification.
Is DTC P05A7, U0046 or U0248 present in the PCM?
Yes
GO to A2.
No
For DTC P05A2 GO to A4.
For DTC P059F or P05A1, GO to A6.
For all other PCM DTCs, REFER to the PCM DTC Chart in Computers and Control Systems.
A2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO THE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Grille Shutter Actuator C1651.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between grille shutter actuator C1651-3, circuit CBB70 (YE/BU), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes
GO to A3.
No
VERIFY BJB (Battery Junction Box) fuse 70 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the cause of the circuit short Electrical Diagrams.
CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
A3 CHECK THE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Measure the resistance between grille shutter actuator C1651-1, circuit GD123 (BK/GY), harness side and ground.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes
For DTC U0046 or U0248, GO to A4.
For DTC P05A7, GO to A8.
No
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
A4 CHECK THE GRILLE ACTUATOR LIN (Local Interconnect Network) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Grille Shutter Actuator C1651 (if not previously disconnected).
- Disconnect: PCM C1381E.
- Measure the resistance between grille shutter actuator C1651-2, circuit VDN06 (WH/GN), harness side and PCM C1381E-41, circuit VDB10 (GY), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes
GO to A5.
No
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
A5 CHECK THE GRILLE ACTUATOR LIN (Local Interconnect Network) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance between grille shutter actuator C1651-2, circuit VDN06 (WH/GN), harness side and ground.
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
GO to A8.
No
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
A6 VERIFY GRILLE SHUTTER OPERATION USING THE GRILL SHUTTER A POSITION COMMAND (GRILL_A_CMD) Parameter Identification (PID)
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for at least 30 seconds to allow for the grille shutter calibration to complete.
- Using a scan tool, view the PCM PIDs (Parameter Identifications).
- While observing the grille shutter assembly, command the PCM GRILL_A_CMD PID (Parameter Identification) from 100% (open) to 0% (closed).
Does the grille shutter assembly fully open and close when commanded by the scan tool?
Yes
The grille shutter system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by the grille shutter actuator electrical connector. INSPECT the electrical connector and REPAIR or REPLACE as necessary.
No
GO to A7.
A7 CHECK THE GRILLE SHUTTER FOR OBSTRUCTIONS AND/OR MECHANICAL BINDING CONCERNS
- Ignition OFF.
- Remove the grille shutter actuator. Refer to Grille Shutter Actuator .
- Manually open and close the grille shutters, removing any obstructions which can prohibit operation of the grille shutters. The grille shutters should open and close easily with no binding.
Does the grille shutter operate freely with no binding or obstruction?
Yes
GO to A8.
No
REPAIR the binding/obstruction or, if necessary, INSTALL a new grille shutter assembly. REFER to Grille Shutter Assembly . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
A8 CHECK FOR CORRECT GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Grille Shutter Actuator C1651 (if not previously disconnected).
- Inspect the grille shutter actuator electrical connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect: Grille Shutter Actuator C1651.
- Connect: PCM C1381E (if previously disconnected).
- Make sure the connectors seat and latch correctly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new grille shutter actuator. REFER to Grille Shutter Actuator . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
