Pinpoint Test D: One Or More Puddle/Scuff Plate Lamp Is Inoperative
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 89, Interior Lamps for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation
The puddle lamps (and scuff plate lamps if equipped) are illuminated when the courtesy lamps are illuminated. The Body Control Module (BCM) uses a separate output circuit that supplies voltage to the puddle lamps. The scuff plate lamps (if equipped) share the voltage supply with the puddle lamps.
- DTC B12C2:11 (Puddle Lamp: Circuit Short To Ground)- a DTC that sets when the BCM (Body Control Module) detects a short to ground from the puddle lamp output circuit.
- DTC U1000:00 (Solid State Driver Protection Active - Driver Disabled: No Sub Type Information)- continuous DTC that sets when the BCM (Body Control Module) has temporarily shut down the output driver. The module has temporarily disabled the puddle lamp output because an excessive current draw exists (such as a short to ground). The BCM (Body Control Module) cannot enable the puddle lamp output until the cause of the short is corrected, the DTCs have been cleared and a successful self-test is run.
- DTC U3000:49 (Control Module: Internal Electronic Failure)- a continuous DTC that sets when the BCM (Body Control Module) has permanently shut down the output driver. The module has permanently disabled the puddle lamp output because an excessive current draw fault (such as a short to ground) has exceeded the limits that the BCM (Body Control Module) can withstand. The cause of the excessive current draw MUST be corrected before a new BCM (Body Control Module) is installed.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Puddle lamp
- Scuff plate lamp
- Exterior mirror
- BCM (Body Control Module)
PINPOINT TEST D : ONE OR MORE PUDDLE/SCUFF PLATE LAMP IS INOPERATIVE
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Make sure the interior courtesy lamps operate before continuing diagnostics.
D1 DETERMINE IF BOTH PUDDLE LAMPS ARE INOPERATIVE
- Ignition OFF.
- Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch to the DOME LAMP ON position for 3 seconds.
Are both puddle lamps inoperative?
Yes
GO to D2.
No
GO to D3.
D2 BYPASS THE BCM (Body Control Module)
NOTE: If the jumper wire fails, refer to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short Electrical Diagrams. After the repair:
If no DTCs are present, test the system for normal operation.
If DTC U1000:00 is present, clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test (required to enable the puddle lamp output driver if DTC U1000:00 is present). Test the system for normal operation.
If DTC U3000:49 is present, install a new BCM (Body Control Module). Test the system for normal operation.
- Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch to the DOME LAMP OFF position for 3 seconds.
- Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) C2280C.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between the BCM (Body Control Module) C2280C-1, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and battery positive.
Do the puddle lamps illuminate?
Yes
REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to D5.
No
REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR circuit CLN25 (VT) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
D3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE PUDDLE OR SCUFF PLATE LAMP
- Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch to the DOME LAMP OFF position for 3 seconds.
- Disconnect: Inoperative Exterior Mirror or Scuff Plate Lamp.
- Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer switch to the DOME LAMP ON position for 3 seconds.
- For a puddle lamp, measure the voltage between the LH exterior mirror C516-5, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and ground; or between the RH exterior mirror C622-5, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and ground.
- For a scuff plate lamp, measure the voltage between the LH scuff plate lamp C3369-1, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and ground; or between the RH scuff plate lamp C3370-1, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to D4.
No
REPAIR circuit CLN25 (VT) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
D4 CHECK THE PUDDLE OR SCUFF PLATE LAMP GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- For a puddle lamp, measure the voltage between the LH exterior mirror C516-5, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and the LH exterior mirror C516-6, circuit GD133 (BK), harness side; or between the RH exterior mirror C622-5, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and the RH exterior mirror C622-6, circuit GD140 (BK/GN), harness side.
- For a scuff plate lamp, measure the voltage between the LH scuff plate lamp C3369-1, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and the LH scuff plate lamp C3369-3, circuit GD133 (BK), harness side; or between the RH scuff plate lamp C3370-1, circuit CLN25 (VT), harness side and the RH scuff plate lamp C3370-3, circuit GD140 (BK/GN), harness side.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
INSTALL a new exterior mirror or scuff plate lamp in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit GD133 (BK) (LH component) or circuit GD140 (BK/GN) (RH component) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
D5 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM (Body Control Module) OPERATION
- Disconnect all the BCM (Body Control Module) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the BCM (Body Control Module) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new BCM (Body Control Module). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
