Pinpoint Test H: The Vehicle Does Not Start

Normal Operation

The Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) uses a visual anti-theft indicator located in the Instrument Cluster (IC). This indicator proves out for 3 seconds when the key is turned to the ON or START position under normal operation. If there is a PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) concern, this indicator either flashes rapidly or glows steadily (for more than 3 seconds) when the key is turned to the ON or START position and PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) DTCs should be set in the IC (Instrument Cluster). PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) also flashes the anti-theft indicator every 2 seconds at key off to act as a visual theft deterrent. The anti-theft indicator operation is controlled by the IC (Instrument Cluster). If the anti-theft indicator is off and the vehicle starter does not engage, or clicks, or engages slowly, or it engages and the engine cranks over, but does not start; it is not a PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) issue. The starting concern may be due to either a starter concern, battery/cable concern or a driveability concern.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Starting system concern

- PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) concern

- Driveability concern

PINPOINT TEST H : THE VEHICLE DOES NOT START

H1 CHECK FOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE PCM AND IC (Instrument Cluster)

- Connect the scan tool.

- Ignition ON.

- Carry out the network test using the scan tool.

Does the scan tool establish communication with the PCM and the IC (Instrument Cluster) ?

Yes
GO to H2.

No
REFER to Information Bus to diagnose the module that is not communicating with the scan tool.

H2 CHECK FOR IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs

- Retrieve the IC (Instrument Cluster) continuous and on-demand DTCs.

Are any IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs present?

Yes
REFER to DTC Charts Antitheft and Alarm Systems.

No
The no-start condition is not PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) -related. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information to diagnose the cause of the no-start condition.
