Pinpoint Test I: DTC B2431

Anti-Theft

Pinpoint Test I: DTC B2431

Normal Operation

During each vehicle start sequence, when the key is turned to the START or ON position, the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transceiver reads the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key identification code and sends the data to the Instrument Cluster (IC). During the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key programming, the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key transponder ID is sent to the IC (Instrument Cluster), where it is verified if it is a valid transponder ID or not. If the IC (Instrument Cluster) determines it is an invalid transponder ID, DTC B2431 sets.

- DTC B2431 (Transponder Programming Failed)- a continuous DTC that sets when there was a failure during the key programming procedure and a bad transponder (in the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key) may cause this DTC.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key programming concern

- PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key concern (transponder)

PINPOINT TEST I : DTC B2431

I1 CHECK BOTH PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) KEYS

NOTE: Check to make sure the new PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys are approved Ford encoded PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys. Unapproved PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys do not always operate correctly over various temperature ranges. (PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys from Ford, Rotunda, Strattec or Huf are approved Ford PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys.)

NOTE: Follow this procedure using both PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys (using one at a time).

- Obtain both PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys from the customer and follow the procedure using one PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key, then the other. If the customer only has one PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key, it will be necessary to cut a new PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key (does not have to be an IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key).

- If it is necessary to cut a new PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key, cut the new key to match the original key. Program the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys. Refer to Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment .

- Ignition ON.

- Clear the DTCs.

- Ignition OFF.

- Ignition ON.

- Retrieve the DTCs.

Is DTC B2431 present with either key?

Yes
CUT a new key to replace the damaged key (the key that DTC B2431 is still present with). DISCARD the damaged key. PROGRAM the keys. REFER to Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment . CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
If DTCs other than PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs are retrieved, REFER to Body Control Systems.

If no PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs are retrieved, the system is OK.
