Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Run the engine at idle, in P (PARK) on automatic transaxle vehicles, or NEUTRAL on MTX (M/T) vehicles. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.
2. Turn all electrical loads OFF (radio, A/C, fan, etc.).
3. Connect Rotunda 88 Digital Multimeter 105-R0053 or equivalent as a tachometer to the number one spark plug wire.
4. Connect a timing light to the engine.

Data Link Connector:

5. Connect terminals Self-test Internal (STI) (TEN) and GND of the data link connector with a jumper wire.
6. Verify that the idle speed is 650-750 rpm.

Timing Marks:

7. Check the ignition timing. Timing should be 9°-11° (10° +/-1°) Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).
8. If the timing is not within specifications, loosen the distributor hold-down bolts.

CAUTION: Do not pinch the ignition coil to distributor high tension wiring when turning the distributor.

9. Turn the distributor until the correct timing is achieved.
10. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-18 lb ft).
11. Remove the tachometer, timing light, and jumper wire.
