Pinpoint Test Q: The Traction Control Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the traction control data from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The traction control indicator flashes when the vehicle traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the PCM. The traction control indicator turns on steady if the traction control system has been disabled through the traction control switch or if a fault condition exists in the system. The IC monitors the traction control message from the PCM and either flashes the traction control indicator or turns it on steady depending on the condition. If the traction control message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0101 in continuous memory and defaults the traction control indicator on.

NOTE: If DTC U0101 is set in the IC, other observable symptoms may be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Traction control concern
- A MyKey(TM) programmed key is in use
- PCM
- IC

PINPOINT TEST Q: THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

NOTE: When a MyKey(TM) programmed key is in use and the AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on, the traction control system cannot be disabled and the traction control indicator does not turn on when the traction control disable button is pressed. The traction control indicator still functions normally to indicate a traction control system fault and a traction control active event.

-------------------------------------------------
Q1 CHECK THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR OPERATION USING THE TRACTION CONTROL DISABLE SWITCH

- Ignition ON.
- Press the traction control disable switch to disable the traction control system while monitoring the traction control indicator.
- Does the traction control indicator illuminate?

Yes
If the traction control indicator does not operate while in traction active mode, GO to Q5.

If the traction control indicator operates in traction active mode, the system is operating normally at this time.

No
GO to Q2.

-------------------------------------------------
Q2 CHECK FOR THE KEY TYPE

- Check if the key is a MyKey(TM) programmed key or administrator key. Refer to Anti-Theft - Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Mykey.
- Is the key an administrator key?

Yes
GO to Q3.

No
If the MyKey(TM) AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on, the system is normal. The traction control system cannot be disabled when the AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on.

If the MyKey(TM) AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is not configured always on, GO to Q3.

-------------------------------------------------
Q3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC C1093, REFER to Vehicle Dynamic Systems Testing and Inspection.

For DTC U0101, GO to Pinpoint Test AM. Pinpoint Tests AM: DTC U0101

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes

No
GO to Q4.

-------------------------------------------------
Q4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE KOEO PCM SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded PCM module DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.

No
GO to Q5.

-------------------------------------------------
Q5 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Enter the IC active command mode and select the traction control indicator (TC/IVD/RSC_LMP ) active command. Command the traction control active indicator on and off. Observe the traction control indicator.
- Does the traction control indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Electronic Engine Controls Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
