Timing Belt: Service and Repair


Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Support engine using support fixture J 28467-A or equivalent, then remove right side engine mount.
3. Remove power steering and alternator drive belts, then upper timing belt cover.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then remove crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley.
5. Lower vehicle and remove lower timing cover.
6. Align crankshaft pulley to TDC, then loosen tension pulley retaining bolt 1/2 turn and remove timing belt.

Installation
1. Align camshaft pulleys timing marks, Fig. 22.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then align crankshaft pulley to TDC.
3. Install timing belt over crankshaft pulley, then install crankshaft pulley, but do not tighten.
4. Lower vehicle, then install timing belt over crankshaft pulley, water pump pulley, idler pulley, exhaust camshaft pulley, intake camshaft pulley and then tensioner pulley as shown in Fig. 23.
5. Torque timing belt tensioner to 31 ft. lbs., then rotate crankshaft two turns to ensure that crankshaft timing pulley mark and camshaft pulley marks are correctly aligned.
6. Install lower timing cover
7. Raise and support vehicle, then torque crankshaft pulley bolt to 87 ft. lbs. on 1.6L engines and 108 ft. lbs. on 1.8L engines
8. Lower vehicle and install upper timing cover.
9. Install alternator and power steering belts, then right side engine mount.
10. Remove engine support and install battery ground cable.
