Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Firing Order:
Fixing Ignition Timing In Duty Check Data Link Connector:
Checking Ignition Timing:
Rotating Distributor To Adjust Ignition Timing:
PROCEDURE
1. Start the engine.
2. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is attained.
3. Perform the following checks:
^ All electrical loads (wipers, radio, headlights, defogger and blower) are turned OFF.
^ The A/C is turned OFF (If equipped).
^ The gearshift control lever is set in Neutral (manual transaxle models) or manual selector lever is in Park (automatic transaxle models).
^ The parking brake is fully engaged.
4. Check that the idle speed is within specification. Refer to Idle Speed Inspection.
5. Connect an inductive timing light to the secondary (spark plug) wire of the No. 1 cylinder.
6. Remove the cap from the Duty Check Data Link Connector (located next to the left strut tower).
7. Connect a fused jumper wire from the Duty Check Data link Connector cavity 4 to cavity 5 so that the ignition timing is fixed.
8. Check the ignition timing. The correct ignition timing is 5 degrees BTDC (+1- 1 degree) at the specified idle speed. Refer to Vehicle Emission Control In formation Label.
9. Adjust the ignition timing if it is not within vehicle specification.
^ Loosen the distributor flange bolts and rotate the distributor.
^ Repeat steps 8 and 9 until the ignition timing is within specifications.
10. Remove the jumper wire from the Duty Check Data Link Connector and make sure that the timing advances according to engine speed.
