Brake Pad: Service and Repair

WARNING: Do not use an air hose to blow the brake assembly clean. Use an OSHA-approved vacuum cleaner, to avoid breathing brake dust.

1. Remove the front wheels and support the front of the car on safety stands.
2. Separate the brake hose clamp from the knuckle by removing the bolts.

Caliper Bolt Removal:




3. Remove the caliper bolt and pivot caliper up out of the way.
4. Remove the pad shims, pad retainers and pads.
5. Clean the caliper thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves or cracks.

Pad Retainer Installation:




6. Install the pad retainers.
7. Apply Molykote M77 compound to both sides of the pad shims and back of the pads.

Brake Pad Installation:




8. Install the brake pads, inner pad shim A and B, and outer pad shim.

NOTE: Install the pad with the wear indicator on the inside.

9. Push in the piston so that the caliper will fit over the pads. Keep the boot in position to prevent damaging the boot when pivoting the caliper down.

Caliper Bolt Installation:




10. Pivot the caliper down into position, then install the caliper bolt and tighten to the specified torque 45.0 Nm (33.0 ft lb).
11. Depress the brake pedal several times to make sure the brakes work, then road-test.
