Engine Removal




Engine Removal

Special Tools Required

- 2008 V6 Attachment Arm SIL02C000033
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Engine Hanger Balance Bar VSB02C000019
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
*Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program, 888-424-6857

NOTE:

- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damaging the wiring and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.

1. Remove the both sides hood support strut, then use it as shown to prop the hood in the wide-open position.





2. Remove the strut brace Frame Brace Replacement.

3. Drain the power steering fluid Service and Repair.

4. Relieve the fuel pressure Service and Repair.

5. Remove the engine cover Intake Manifold Removal/Installation.

6. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.

7. Remove the splash separator Radiator Replacement.

8. Remove the front grille cover:

- 2-door Front Grille Cover Replacement (2-Door)
- 4-door Front Grille Cover Replacement (4-Door)

9. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair.

10. Remove the harness clamp (A), the bolts (B), and loosen the bolts (C), then remove the battery base (D).






11. Disconnect the battery cables (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box.






12. Remove the ECM/PCM cover (A), then remove the three bolts (B) securing the ECM/PCM.






13. Disconnect the ECM/PCM connectors (A) and the engine wire harness connector (B), then remove the harness clamps (C) and the bracket (D).





14. M/T model: Disconnect the engine wire harness connector (E).

15. Disconnect the EVAP canister hose (A) and the brake booster vacuum hose (B).






16. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B) Fuel Line/Quick-Connect Fitting Removal.






17. Remove the drive belt:

- '08-10 models J35Z2 engine Drive Belt Replacement (J35Z2 Engine)
- Except '08-10 models J35Z2 engine Drive Belt Replacement (J35Z3 Engine)

18. Disconnect the power steering pump outlet hose (A) and the power steering pump inlet line (B) from the power steering pump and remove the power steering hose bracket (C), then plug the power steering hoses and the power steering pump.






19. Remove the steering wheel Steering Wheel Removal.

20. Remove the steering joint cover (A).





21. Make a reference mark (B) across the steering joint (C) and the steering gearbox pinion shaft (D). Remove the steering joint bolt (E), and loosen the steering joint bolt (F), then disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft.

22. M/T model: Remove the three bolts securing the shift cable holder, then remove the shift cable and the select cable Manual Transmission Removal. Do not bend the cables excessively.

23. M/T model: Remove the clutch slave cylinder and the clutch line bracket mounting nut Manual Transmission Removal. Do not operate the clutch pedal once the slave cylinder has been removed.

24. A/T model: Remove the shift cable Service and Repair. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

25. Wait until the engine is cold, then carefully remove the radiator cap.

26. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

27. Remove the front wheels.

28. Remove the splash shield.





29. Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant Service and Repair.

30. Drain the engine oil Service and Repair.

31. Drain the transmission fluid:

- Manual transmission Service and Repair
- Automatic transmission ATF Replacement

32. Remove exhaust pipe A.





33. Remove the damper fork Front Lower Arm Removal/Installation.

34. Separate the tie-rod end ball joints from the knuckles Front Knuckle/Hub/Wheel Bearing Replacement.

35. Separate the knuckles from the lower arms Front Knuckle/Hub/Wheel Bearing Replacement.

36. Remove the driveshafts Driveshaft Removal. Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.

37. Disconnect the power steering hose (A), then plug the line and the hose.






38. Disconnect the PSP switch connector (A).





39. Lower the vehicle on the lift.

40. Remove the radiator Radiator Replacement.

41. Disconnect the heater hoses (A).






42. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A), then remove the A/C compressor (B) without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively.






43. A/T model: Remove the ATF cooler hoses from the transmission, then plug the ATF cooler hoses and the lines Service and Repair.

44. Remove the harness holder and the connectors from the front cylinder head:

- J35Z2 engine Cylinder Head Cover Removal (J35Z2 Engine)
- J35Z3 engine Cylinder Head Cover Removal (J35Z3 Engine)

45. Remove the connector bracket (A) from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach the engine hanger balance bar front arm.

46. Remove the harness clamp bracket (A) from the rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm (SIL02C000033).

47. Install the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with several spacers (B) and a bolt (10 x 1.25 mm) (C), attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm (SIL02C000033) to the rear cylinder head with an (8 x 1.25 mm) bolt (D), then attach the rear arm (E) to the 2008 V6 attachment arm.





48. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (F) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.

NOTE:

- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
- AAR-T1256 two sets required for stacking additional cross section bar.

49. M/T model: Remove the front engine mount stop (A), then remove the front engine mount mounting bolt (B) and disconnect the vacuum hose (C).






50. A/T model: Remove the front engine mount stop (A), then remove the front engine mount mounting bolt (B) and disconnect the engine mount actuator connector (C) and remove the connector (D) from the front subframe.






51. M/T model: Lift and support the engine/transmission with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission. Remove the rear engine mount mounting bolt (A), then remove the mount-to-subframe bolts (B).






52. A/T model: Remove the rear engine mount stop (A), then remove the rear engine mount mounting bolt (B) and disconnect the engine mount actuator connector (C).






53. A/T model: Remove the harness clamps (A).





54. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

55. Remove the subframe middle mount on both sides.






56. Remove the nuts securing the lower transmission mount.






57. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).





58. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.

59. Remove the four 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (A) (B) securing the stiffeners (C), the four subframe mounting bolts (D), and the stiffeners, then lower the front subframe (E).





60. Lower the vehicle on the lift.

61. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the engine hanger (B) and the transmission hanger (C), then lift the engine/transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist, and remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger balance bar.






62. A/T model: Remove the ground cable (A).






63. Remove the side engine mount bracket mounting bolts (A) from the upper half of the side engine mount bracket.






64. M/T model: Remove the ground cable (A), then remove the upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts (B).

NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (C) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.






65. A/T model: Remove the harness bracket (A), then remove the upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts and nut (B).

NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (C) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.






66. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.

67. Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.

68. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.

69. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.
