Cable Reel Replacement

Removal

1. Make sure the front wheels are aligned straight ahead.

2. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure, then wait at least 3 minutes before starting work.

3. Remove the driver's airbag.

4. Disconnect cable reel connector C (20P) on the cable reel subharness from the cable reel (A), then remove the steering wheel bolt (B).





5. Confirm that the front wheels point straight ahead, then remove the steering wheel with a steering wheel puller.
Do not tap on the steering wheel or steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel.

6. Remove the upper and lower column covers Steering Column Cover Removal/Installation.

7. Disconnect cable reel connector B (4P) on the dashboard wire harness and cable reel connector A (20P) on the dashboard wire harness from the cable reel (C).






8. Release the upper lock tab (A) under the cable reel connector with a 90 ° hook shaped tool (B). Slide the tool below the cable reel connector just above the lock tab. Release the lower lock tab (C), and slide the cable reel off the column.






Installation

1. Before installing the steering wheel, make sure the front wheels are aligned straight ahead.

2. If not already done, disconnect the negative cable from the 12 volt battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.

3. Set the turn signal canceling sleeve (A) so that the tabs (B) are aligned vertically.






4. Carefully install the cable reel (C) on the steering column shaft. Then connect cable reel connector A (20P) on the dashboard wire harness and cable reel connector B (4P) on the dashboard wire harness to the cable reel.





5. Install the upper and lower column covers Steering Column Cover Removal/Installation.

6. Before installing the steering wheel, make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead, then center the cable reel (A). Do this by first rotating the cable reel clockwise until it stops. Then rotate it counterclockwise about three full turns. The arrow mark (B) on the cable reel label should point straight up.






7. Position the two tabs (A) of the turn signal canceling sleeve as shown, and install the steering wheel on to the steering column shaft, making sure the steering wheel hub (B) engages the pins (C) of the cable reel and tabs of the turn signal canceling sleeve. Do not tap on the steering wheel or steering column shaft when installing the steering wheel.






8. Install the steering wheel bolt (A), and tighten it to the specified torque. Connect cable reel connector C (20P) on the cable reel subharness to the cable reel (B). Make sure the wire harness is routed and fastened properly.





9. Install the driver's airbag.

10. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure.

11. Clear any DTCs with the HDS.

12. After installing the cable reel, confirm proper system operation:

- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.
- Make sure the horn and turn signal switches work properly.
- Make sure the steering wheel switches work properly.
- Make sure the horn works properly.

13. After installation, check the steering wheel spoke angle. If the steering spoke angles to the right and left are not equal (steering wheel is not centered), correct the engagement of the steering wheel/column shaft splines.
