Parking Brake Shoe: Adjustments

This procedure has been modified in accordance with Land Rover Technical Bulletin LTB00354

Parking Brake Shoe and Lining Adjustment

Service Repair No - 70.40.11


NOTE: This procedure must be carried out if, new parking brake shoes are fitted, new rear brake discs are fitted or if the vehicle has been mud wading (not water) for more than 50 miles.

CAUTION: This new procedure requires the use of the Land Rover-approved diagnostic tool to ensure that the vehicle is in 'mounting position' before any adjustment is conducted.

CAUTION: Ensure all ignition 'ON' / ignition 'OFF' requests are carried out; failure to perform these steps may cause damage to control modules in the vehicle.

CAUTION: A Land Rover-approved Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during IDS diagnosis / module programming.

1. Connect the Land Rover-approved Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle battery.

2. Turn ignition 'ON' (engine not running).

NOTE: IDS must be loaded with IDS-DVD124_V6.01 or later and Calibration File 58 or later.

3. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and begin a new Symptom Driven Diagnostics (SDD) session.

4. Follow the on-screen prompts, allowing SDD to read the VIN and identify the vehicle.

5. From the Session Type selection screen, select 'Service Functions'.

6. Select the 'Selected Symptoms' tab.

7. Select 'Chassis'

- Select 'Continue'

8. Select the 'Recommendations' tab.

9. From the Recommendations tab, select and execute 'Parking Brake - Drive the parking brake to the mounting position

- Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.


10. WARNING: Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

Raise and support the vehicle.
11. Remove the wheels and tires.
12. Locate the parking brake shoe adjuster.
^ Remove the access plug.
^ Rotate the brake disc.





13. CAUTION: The direction of rotation must always be forward.

CAUTION: If the effort required is less than 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) tighten the adjuster by one click at a time.

Using a flat bladed screwdriver and a torque wrench on the halfshaft stake nut, rotate the brake shoe adjuster to extend it until the torque to turn the brake disc is 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).





14. CAUTION: The direction of rotation must always be forward.

CAUTION: The effort required to rotate the disc must be less than 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: The effort required to rotate the brake disc from the halfshaft stake nut must be between 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).

Using a torque wrench on the halfshaft stake nut, make sure that the brake disc will still rotate forwards before 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.) of torque is reached.

15. CAUTION: The parking brake adjuster must be rotated back EXACTLY 8 clicks. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the parking brake system.

Rotate the adjuster back 8 clicks.
16. Loosen the wedge adjuster Allen screw half a turn.





17. Tap the brake disc lightly with a soft faced mallet, around the parking brake shoe location within the brake disc.

18. Tighten the wedge adjuster Allen screw to 6 Nm (5 ft. lbs.).

19. Install the access plug.

20. Repeat the above procedure for the other side.

21. Carry out the parking brake shoe bedding-in procedure.

^ If the parking brake shoes or the brake discs have been removed for access to other components then DO NOT carry out this procedure.


22. After the adjustments have been performed, return to the Recommendations list and execute 'Parking Brake -Drive the parking brake to the latching position'.

23. Exit the current session.

24. Turn ignition 'OFF'.

25. Disconnect the IDS and the Midtronics Vehicle Power Supply from the vehicle.
