Information and Message Center

OPERATION
The information and messages which can be displayed in the instrument cluster are mainly generated from other system control modules. When a system control module detects a change or a fault which is tagged to generate a message, an electronic signal is sent via the medium or high speed CAN (controller area network) buses to the instrument cluster, which displays the message. If more than one message is requested the instrument cluster displays them in order of priority.

DESCRIPTION

Odometer
The odometer is located in the bottom RH (right-hand) side of the message center. The odometer displays the total distance the vehicle has traveled. The trip computer readout replaces this when the driver requests trip information display.

Trip Computer
The trip computer memory stores data for a journey or series of journeys until it is reset to zero.
The following are available on the trip computer:
- Trip distance
- Trip average speed
- Trip average fuel consumption
- Instantaneous fuel consumption
- Range available on remaining fuel.
There are 3 independent trip recordings available to view; A, B and automatic. The instrument cluster main menu is used to select which trip recording is displayed. The A and B memories can be set independently, while the Auto trip will reset after every ignition cycle as the vehicle moves.
The automatic trip is always available and is reset each time the engine is started and the vehicle moves. Previous trips can be added to form a continuous trip recording by pressing and releasing the trip button on the end of the LH (left-hand) steering column multifunction switch when the automatic trip information is displayed. The message center will confirm that the previous journey information has been added and pressing and holding the trip button for 3 seconds will add the data. The previous trip information can also be deleted by pressing and releasing the trip button when the automatic trip information is displayed. The message center will confirm deletion of the previous journey data and pressing and holding the trip button for 3 seconds will delete the previous trip information.
Trip A and B can be reset by the driver at any time. When the required trip information is displayed, pressing and holding the trip button for 3 seconds will erase the previous trip information stored. Resetting trip A or B will not affect the other trip information, for example, if trip A is reset, trip B will retain its information until it is reset.

Ambient Temperature
The ambient temperature is displayed in the top RH (right-hand) side of the TFT screen. The temperature can be displayed in degrees F or C and this is selectable by the driver using the instrument cluster main menu.
If the external temperature falls to 4°C (39°F) or below, the external temperature display is accompanied by an amber snowflake symbol.
The ambient temperature signal is obtained from the ambient temperature sensor located in the passenger door mirror, the sensor signals are passed to the instrument cluster on the medium speed CAN (controller area network) bus from the climate control module.

Message Center
The message center is located in the center of the TFT screen. Other information displayed in this area will be temporarily removed to allow for the message to be displayed.
The majority of messages are generated by the cluster which monitors system status via the bus systems and displays system information messages as requested by the controlling module. Other system control modules are also capable of generating messages to display system status. Some messages are accompanied by a chime, which is requested by the control module generating the message and generated by the instrument cluster via the sounder, which is located on the back of the cluster.
The messages are displayed in priority order (if more than one message) for approximately 4seconds as the event occurs. The driver can view current system status messages in the instrument cluster. When the ignition is on the warning messages can be displayed using the 'show warnings' selection in the main menu.
The messages are displayed in a language applicable to the vehicle market configuration and can be changed using the instrument cluster main menu.
Main Menu
The main menu is selected using the 'joy pad' 'OK' switch on the RH (right-hand) side of the steering wheel. The switch allows access to the following menu functions:
- Show warnings
- Vehicle set-up
- Trip computer
- Display settings
- Service menu.
Show Warnings
If any warnings are present in the message center, pressing the 'OK' button minimizes the warning and shows either a small red, or small amber triangle in the top corners of the TFT to show a warning message has been suppressed. However, they can be retrieved by selecting 'Show Warning' from the menu and pressing the 'OK' button. The messages will display for 2 seconds in turn if there is more then one message.
If the menu is elected and no selections are made for approximately 10 seconds, the menu is switched off.
Vehicle Set-Up
The vehicle set-up menu allows access to the following vehicle features:

NOTE:
Features are only displayed if fitted and configured on the vehicle.
- Speed Warning - allows the driver to activate/de-activate the speed warning and also to select the warning vehicle speed setting.
- High Beam Assist - allows the driver three selection for high beam assist; activate/de-activate the high beam assist function, drive on left or drive on right.
- Alarm Sensors - activate/de-activate tilt sensors
- Cruise Eco Data - display cruising average ECO graph to show average g/CO2 per kilometer
- Blind spot monitor - configure blind spot monitoring system
- Reverse-Dip Mirror - activate/de-activate dip function
- Easy Entry/Exit - activate/de-activate function
- 2-Stage Unlocking - activate/de-activate function
- Winter Wiper Park - activate/de-activate function. Wipers move to the current selected park position.
- Drive Away Locking - select from Off, 5 MPH, 10MPH or 20MPH
- Headlamp Delay - select from Off, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 120 seconds or 240 seconds.
Trip computer
The trip computer allows the driver to select which trip computer is displayed and the units they are displayed in as follows:
- Trip A - select with 'OK'
- Trip B - select with 'OK'
- Trip Auto - select with 'OK'
- Units - select from Miles, MPH, MPG or km, km/h, l/100km.
Display Settings
There are two selections in the display settings menu; Language and Temperature.
The Language menu allows the driver to select the instrument cluster and message center messages to be displayed in any one of 17 languages.
The Temperature menu allows the driver to select the temperature display in either Celsius or Fahrenheit.
Service Menu
The Service Menu can only be accessed when the engine is not running. The menu has 3 selectable options:
- VIN Display - pressing 'OK' on this menu shows the VIN (vehicle identification number)
- Last Alarm Status - this shows the last cause of an alarm activation, for example a door being left open
- HBA Assist - This allows the driver to change the setting of the High Beam Assist function between 'Normal mode' and 'Alternate mode'.

Gear Position Display
The gear position is displayed in the bottom LH (left-hand) corner of the TFT screen. It shows the current selector position P, R, N, D or S. When the transmission is in manual Dynamic Mode, the display will show the currently selected gear ratio.
The gear position display is controlled by the TCM (transmission control module). The gear position is illuminated in response to high speed CAN (controller area network) bus messages from the TCM (transmission control module).

Navigation Information
The navigation system can display information in the TFT screen. When navigation information is displayed, other information is removed while the navigation information is displayed.

Service Interval Indicator
The service interval message will only be displayed when the vehicle has less than 3200 km (2000 miles) before the service is due. When the ignition is switched on, and the vehicle has started its service countdown, SERVICE REQ'D XXXX km (XXXX MLS) is displayed in the message centre.
When the service distance has been reached, SERVICE REQUIRED is displayed in the message centre.
On diesel models the ECM (engine control module) also monitors and calculates when the time to the next oil service is required and when an oil service is required, 'Service Required' is displayed in the message center. This message takes priority over the distance to service calculation. This is applicable to diesel models due to oil dilution during the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration process under certain operating conditions.
The ECM (engine control module) service interval counter is reset by the dealer when the service has been completed using an approved Land Rover diagnostic system.
