Speedometer Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The combination meter receives vehicle speed signals from the skid control ECU via the CAN line. The vehicle speed sensor outputs a voltage that varies according to the vehicle speed. The skid control ECU supplies power to the vehicle speed sensor. The skid control ECU calculates vehicle speed based on the pulses of the voltage.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION
(a) Check for DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Result

B -- Go to CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
A -- Continue to next step.
2. CHECK VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM (VEHICLE SPEED)
(a) Check for DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
OK:
No DTCs are output.
NG -- Go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (SPEEDOMETER)
(a) Operate the Techstream according to the display and select the Active Test Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.

Combination Meter

HINT:
- Make sure that the vehicle is stopped and the engine is idling. The doors will be locked automatically when performing the speedometer Active Test. This is a normal function.
- The displayed value has the same units (km/h, mph) as the main scale of the vehicle speedometer.
- The needle position should be within the acceptable tolerance.
OK:
Needle indication is normal.

NG -- REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (VEHICLE SPEED)
(a) Operate the Techstream according to the display and select the Data List Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.

Combination Meter

OK:
Vehicle speed displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as actual vehicle speed measured using speedometer tester (calibrated chassis dynamometer).
NG -- REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.
5. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (WHEEL SPEED SENSOR)
(a) Operate the Techstream according to the display and select the Data List Data List / Active Test.

ABS/VSC/TRAC

OK:
Wheel speed displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as actual wheel speed measured using speedometer tester (calibrated chassis dynamometer).
NG -- Go to VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM
OK -- REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY
