DTC P2118 - Throttle Actuator Control Motor Current Range / Performance
DESCRIPTION
The Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) has a dedicated power supply circuit. The voltage (+BM) is monitored and when the voltage is low (less than 4 V), the ECM concludes that the ETCS has a fault and current to the throttle actuator is cut.
When the voltage becomes unstable, the ETCS itself becomes unstable. For this reason, when the voltage is low, the current to the throttle actuator is cut. If repairs are made and the system has returned to normal, turn the ignition switch OFF. The ECM then allows current to flow to the throttle actuator so that the engine can be restarted.
HINT: The ETCS does not use a throttle cable.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ECM monitors the battery supply voltage applied to the electronic throttle motor +BM. When the power supply voltage drops below the threshold, the ECM concludes that the power supply has an open circuit.
The MIL is turned on and a DTC is set.

FAIL-SAFE
When any of these DTCs, as well as other DTCs relating to Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) malfunctions are set, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is returned to a 7° throttle angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing, in accordance with the accelerator pedal opening angle, to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed.
If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.
Fail-safe mode continues until a "pass" condition is detected, and the ignition switch is then turned OFF.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT: Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air/fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
PROCEDURE
1. INSPECT FUSE (ETCS FUSE)
(a) Remove the ETCS fuse from the engine room R/B.
(b) Measure the resistance of the ETCS fuse.
Standard resistance:
Below 1 Ohms
(c) Reinstall the ETCS fuse.
NG -- REPLACE FUSE
OK -- Continue to next step.
2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (+BM VOLTAGE)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(c) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / +BM Voltage.
Standard voltage:
9 to 14 V
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
NG -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM - ETCS FUSE, ETCS FUSE - BATTERY)
(a) Remove the ETCS fuse from the engine room R/B.
(b) Disconnect the E9 ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connector between the ETCS fuse and ECM.
Standard resistance (Check for open):
Standard resistance (Check for short):
(d) Disconnect the battery positive terminal.
(e) Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connector between the ETCS fuse and battery.
Standard resistance (Check for open):
Standard resistance (Check for short):
(f) Reconnect the ECM connector.
(g) Reinstall the ETCS fuse.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM
