B - Control Illumination Inoperative

Pinpoint Test B - Control Illumination Inoperative

NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide a procedure to perform the following pinpoint test without the Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) tester 007-00500 or equivalent.

B1 - Check Pulse Width Modulated Dimming

- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.

Do parklamps turn on and switches on instrument panel light?

YES TURN off parking lamps, GO to B4.
NO GO to B2.

B2 - Check Parklamps

- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.

Do parklamps turn on?

YES Turn off parking lamps, test fuse 4 (10A) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or fuse 15 (15A) Town Car. If good, GO to B16.
NO GO to B3.

B3 - Check Panel Lamps

- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.

Do parkiamps turn on and panel lamps do not?

YES TURN off parking lamps, TEST fuse 4 (10A) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or fuse 15 (15A) Town Car. If good, GO to B16.
NO GO to B4.

B4 - Check Variable Voltage Dimming Backlighting

- Turn ignition switch to RUN. Wait for displays to illuminate.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.

Do displays dim slightly when lights turn on?

YES GO to B7.
NO GO to B5.

B5 - Check Dimming Backlighting, One Dims Others Do Not

- Turn ignition switch to RUN. Wait for displays to illuminate.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.

Does at least one display dim and at least one display does not dim?

YES TEST for voltage on circuit 19 (LB/R) into module controlling display which does not dim. If voltage reads greater than 2 volts, replace display module. If voltage is less than 2 volts, SERVICE circuit 19 (LB/R). Retest system.
NO GO to B6.

B6 - Check Dimming Backlighting, No Backlighting Dimming

- Turn ignition switch to RUN. Wait for displays to illuminate.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.

Do all displays not dim?

YES GO to B18.
NO GO to B7.

B7 - Check Panel Dimming Switch

- Turn ignition switch to RUN. Wait for displays to illuminate.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position
- Press panel dim increase switch for several seconds

Do visual displays and switch backlights increase and decrease with switch?

YES System is operating normally.
NO GO to B8.

B8 - Check Panel Dimmer Intensity

- Turn ignition switch to RUN. Wait for displays to illuminate.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.
- Press panel. Dim increase switch for several seconds.

Do panel switches, intensity change, displays stay at maximum light on intensity?

YES REPLACE lighting control module. RETEST system.
NO GO to B9.

B9 - Check Panel Dimmer Switch Intensity

- Turn ignition switch to RUN. Wait for displays to illuminate.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.
- Press panel dim increase switch for several seconds.

Do displays intensity change, switches stay at maximum intensity.

YES CHECK circuit 484 (O/BK) for short to B+. If circuit is good, REPLACE lighting control module. RETEST system.
NO GO to B10.

B10 - Check Panel Dimmer And Increase Or Decrease

- Turn ignition switch to RUN. Wait for displays to illuminate.
- Turn headlamp switch to parking lamp position.
- Press panel dim increase switch for several seconds.

Do switches and displays increase intensity but do not decrease, or decrease but do not increase or stay at one intensity?

YES GO to B11.
NO REPLACE lighting control module. RETEST system.

B11 - Check Panel Dim Switch

- Connect Rotunda New Generation Star Tester 007-00500 or equivalent to data link connector
- Request panel backlight control input switch status.

Does data indicate both switches not active?

YES GO to B14.
NO GO to B12.

B12 - Check Panel Dim Switch Increase Active

- Using the NGS, request panel backlight control input switch status.

Does data indicate increase switch active?

YES CHECK circuit 1035 (O/R) for short to B+ or stuck switch. RETEST system.
NO GO to B13.

B13 - Check Panel Dim Switch Decrease Active

- Using the NGS, request panel backlight control input switch status

Does data indicate decrease switch active?

YES CHECK circuit 1036 (BR/W) for short to B+ or stuck switch. RETEST system.
NO GO to B14.

B14 - Check Panel Dim Decrease Switch

- Using NGS while holding panel dim decrease switch, request panel backlight control input switch status.

Does data indicate switch active?

YES CHECK circuit 1036 (BR/W) for open circuit or damaged switch. RETEST system.
NO GO to B15.

B15 - Check Panel Dim Increase Switch

- Using NGS while holding panel dim increase switch, request panel backlight control input switch status.

Does data indicate switch active?

YES CHECK circuit 1035 (O/R) for open circuit or damaged switch. RETEST system.
NO GO to B16.

B16 - Check Power Feed

- Disconnect from lighting control module connector C3.
- Read voltage at pin C3-6.

Is voltage reading B+?

YES CHECK circuit 195 (T/W) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 221 (O/W) Town Car for open circuit or damaged switch. RETEST system.
NO GO to B17.

B17 - Check Pulse Width Modulator Output

- Using a jumper wire, short lighting control module pin C3-6 to pin C3-12.

Do switch backlights turn on?

YES REPLACE lighting control module. RETEST system.
NO RETEST system.

B18 - Check Power Feed

- Remove from lighting control module from connector C3.
- Read voltage at pin C3-11.

Is voltage reading B+?

YES GO to B19.
NO CHECK circuit 54 (LG/Y) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 195 (T/W) Town Car for open circuit. RETEST system.

B19 - Check Variable Display Voltage Output

- Using a jumper wire, short pin C3-6 to pin C3-2.

Do displays dim?

YES REPLACE lighting control module. RETEST system.
NO CHECK circuit 19 (LB/R) for open circuit. RETEST system.
