P0133
Aging of Oxygen Sensor Ahead of Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) (Cylinder 1-3)

P0153
Aging of Oxygen Sensor Ahead of Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) (Cylinder 4-6)

Function
The diagnosis of "Oxygen sensor aging" helps to identify oxygen sensors that exceed emission limits because of aging. During the diagnosis of oxygen sensor aging, the EMC monitors the length of the time period of the sensor signal. With an old sensor, the time period is too long, i.e. the diffusion of oxygen into the exhaust gas is more difficult for the sensor. Reasons could be frequent driving in the lower load range (city driving, short distances, etc.) or a contaminated sensor.

Diagnostic conditions
- Engine speed between 920 1/min and 2000 1/min.
- Engine load between 1.0 ms/revol. and 2.1 ms/revol.
- TWC at operating temperature.
No faults for misfire recognition, throttle valve, oxygen sensor heating, Hall sender, fuel tank ventilation, fuel tank ventilation end stage, voltage supply, mixture adaptation.

NOTE: If DTC P0133/P0153 is stored, heat oxygen sensors (road test under load, run engine at high rpm with no load). Erase DTC memory and road test again (during which the engine rpm must be between 920 1/min and 2000 1/min for 120 sec.). Now read DTC memory again. If DTC P0133 is found again, replace the respective oxygen sensor.

Diagnostic procedure
Read DTC memory and correct faults
1. Read DTC memory.
2. Correct faults as per Repair Manual.
3. Erase DTC memory.
4. Afterwards road test vehicle as described above.
5. Again read DTC memory.
If no fault: End

After erasing DTC memory, road test vehicle.
1. Erase DTC memory.
2. Heat oxygen sensor (road test vehicle under load, run engine at high rpm with no load).
3. Road test vehicle during which the engine speed must be between 950 1/min and 3000 1/min for 120 sec. with engine at operating temperature.
4. Connect system tester or scan tool. Switch to menu point "DTC memory".
If no fault: End

Replace oxygen sensor
1. Replace oxygen sensor as per Repair Manual.
2. Road test vehicle during which the engine must run for 120 sec. between 950 1/min and 3000 1/min when the engine is at operating temperature.
3. Connect system tester or scan tool and switch to menu point "DTC memory".
No fault found: End.
