EVAP Canister Purge Control Valve - Short Circuit
Function
Hydrocarbons from fuel evaporation in the fuel tank are not discharged into the open air but collected by an Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister. The EVAP Canister is installed in the left rear wheel well. To recycle the hydrocarbons into the combustion process, the EVAP Canister is purged and the activated charcoal is regenerated. Between the EVAP Canister and the air intake system, an Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Valve is installed. The direction of flow is marked on the plastic housing by an arrow.
Diagnosis conditions
The diagnosis of the EVAP Canister Purge Valve is active when the engine temperature is higher than 80.25°C and conditions exist for the purging of the EVAP Canister
Wiring Diagram.
Diagnosis procedure
Check resistance of wire connections at plus side of EVAP Canister Purge Valve
1. Remove ECM relay from fuse/relay panel.
2. Disconnect connectors for fuel injectors, Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve, and frequency valve and remove relays for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump and A/C from fuse/relay panel.
3. With jumper cable, connect ohmmeter between EVAP Canister Purge Valve connector pin 1 and ECM relay connector pin 87. Display: 0 - 5 Ohms.
- If OK: Check resistance of wire connections at negative side of EVAP Canister Purge Valve
- If not OK.: Repair wiring harness.
Check resistance of wire connections at negative side of EVAP Canister Purge Valve
1. With ignition off, remove ECM connector and EVAP Canister Purge Valve connector
2. With jumper wire, connect ohmmeter to ECM connector, pin 61 and EVAP Canister Purge Valve connector, pin 2. Display: 0 - 5 Ohms.
- If OK: Check ECM end stage
- If not OK.: Repair wiring harness.
Check ECM end stage
1. With ignition off, connect Bosch L-Jetronik adapter cable 1684463093 between EVAP Canister Purge Valve connector and EVAP Canister Purge Valve.
2. Connect voltmeter to Bosch adapter cable.
3. Start engine. Display: With engine at operating temperature and idle rpm < 7V.
- If not OK : Replace ECM.
