CAN Timeout - Signal Implausible.

Function:
The CAN bus is a data transmission system specially developed for use in the vehicle. The CAN bus is bidirectional, i.e. each control module connected to it can transmit and receive.

The CAN bus consists of a twisted two-core wire. At present, only the ECM and the Tiptronic control module are connected to it.

A CAN timeout means that the ECM was unable to establish a connection with the Tiptronic control module.

Diagnostic Conditions:
- Vehicle with Tiptronic transmission
- Battery positive voltage greater than 7 Volt
- Idle speed

Wiring Diagram:

Diagnostic Procedure:

1. Check CAN bus from ECM to Tiptronic control module for continuity.
1. Remove ECM plug.
2. Remove Tiptronic control module plug.
3. Connect ohmmeter to ECM plug, pin 85, and Tiptronic plug, pin 85.

Display: 0 - 5 Ohms.

4. Connect ohmmeter to ECM plug, pin 86, and Tiptronic plug, pin 86.

Display: 0 - 5 ohms.

If Infinity Ohms is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.

2. Check CAN bus from ECM to Tiptronic control module for short to ground.
1. Remove ECM plug.
2. Remove Tiptronic control module plug.
3. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness.
4. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 85 and ground.

Display: Infinity Ohms.

5. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 86 and ground.

Display: Infinity Ohms.

If 0 - 5 Ohms is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.

3. Check CAN bus from ECM to Tiptronic control module for short to B+.
1. Remove ECM plug.
2. Remove Tiptronic control module plug.
3. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness.
4. Connect voltmeter to special tool 9616, pin 85, and ground.
Switch on ignition.

Display: 0 Volt.

5. Connect voltmeter to special tool 9616, pin 86, and ground.
Switch on ignition.

Display: 0 Volt.

If battery positive voltage is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.

4. Check CAN bus from ECM to Tiptronic control module for short circuit.
1. Remove ECM plug.
2. Remove Tiptronic control module plug.
3. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness.
4. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pins 85 and 86.

Display: Infinity Ohms.

If 0 - 5 Ohms is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.
