Checking the timing
Checking the timing for camshafts
NOTICE
Incorrect handling of crankshafts
- Risk of damage to the timing system
-> Never turn the crankshaft against the rolling direction or when the chain tensioner is removed.
-> Proceed carefully with your work.
-> Only turn the engine at the crankshaft.
-> Reset the timing after working on the camshaft.
-> Observe general warning notes and working regulations.
Information
- The engine does not have to be removed in order to check the timing.
Information
- If the camshaft bar cannot be inserted into the grooves of the camshafts, either the crankshaft must be turned by a further full turn in the direction of rotation of the engine, or the tolerance in the timing chain must be taken into account. In the latter case, the crankshaft must be turned to approx. 5 mm above the marking.
1. Position crankshaft at the TDC for cylinder 1.
Information
Non-observance of the direction of rotation of the engine can damage the engine irreparably.
1.1. Turn the crankshaft at the fastening screw for the vibration damper until the crankshaft is positioned at the TDC for cylinder 1 (direction of rotation of engine as viewed from the top/vibration damper is clockwise).
1.2. The markings on the vibration damper and joint flange must be aligned -arrow-.
1.3. All four cams on cylinder 1 must be facing upwards at the same time (compression TDC).

2. Insert camshaft bar.
2.1. The camshaft bar - A - must fit into the groove on the intake and outlet camshafts at the same time.

3. Check the timing.
3.1. There are two markings on the timing chain housing - MPI and FSI.
The FSI marking must be used for this engine.

3.2. The arrow -1- , which is stamped on the intake camshaft controller, must be aligned with the FSI marking -2- on the cover of the timing chain housing.

3.3. The notch -1- on the outlet camshaft controller must be aligned with the FSI marking -2- on the timing chain housing.

3.4. If the FSI markings on the camshaft controllers match the markings on the timing chain housing, the timing is set correctly.
3.5. If the markings do not match, the timing must be reset => 150516 Setting the timing on V6 DFI engines.
Subsequent work
1. Install the cylinder head cover.=> 158219 Removing and installing cylinder head cover on V6 DFI engines- section on "Installing"
2. Install bar ignition modules => 282020 Removing and installing DFI bar ignition modules - section on "Installing".
3. Install intake-air distributor => 244619 Removing and installing DFI intake-air distributor - section on "Installing".
