Oil Pan: Service and Repair

Technical values





Preliminary work

Information

- Collect oil in a clean container so that it can be re-used.

1. Fit hook for workshop crane and support engine on the body.=> 1001IN Supporting V6 3.6-litre DFI engine on the body
2. Drain engine oil.=> 170117 Engine oil and oil filter change on DFI engines - section on "Draining"
3. Remove oil dipstick together with guide tube.
4. Remove engine guard. => 108019 Removing and installing engine guard (underbody panel) on DFI engines - section on "Removing"
5. Remove the front-axle carrier. => 400619 Removing and installing front axle carrier
6. Remove steering gear.=> 48901900 Removing and installing steering gear - section on "Removing"
7. Remove front-axle final drive.=> 39881900 Removing and installing all-wheel final drive - section on "Removing"
8. Remove engine carrier.=> 103019 Removing and installing engine carrier for DFI engines - section on "Removing"

Removing the oil pan

WARNING

Engine oil is toxic.

- Danger of poisoning.

-> Do not consume food or drink while working (danger of mixing).
-> If swallowed, observe the warning information on the containers, contact a doctor if necessary and show the information on the containers.

WARNING

Danger of scalding with hot engine oil.

-> Allow engine and components to cool down.
-> Avoid contact with the skin and eyes.
-> Wear suitable protective clothing.

WARNING

Oil is combustible.

- Risk of fire due to oil and hot components (exhaust manifold, etc.)

-> Do not pour engine oil over very hot components (e.g. turbocharger).
-> Never place cloths soaked with oil on hot engine components.
-> In case of fire, use CO2 or dry powder fire extinguishers.

1. Disconnect electrical plug -a- on the oil level sensor.

2. Unscrew four fastening screws between oil pan and transmission.
3. Unscrew oil pan fastening screws opposite to the order shown - i.e. from 25 to 1 -.

4. Remove oil pan.
4.1. Detach adhered oil pan by knocking lightly with a rubber hammer.
4.2. Remove any residual sealant on the crankcase using a plastic wedge.
4.3. Clean sealing surfaces thoroughly.
4.4. Remove any residual silicone using a special plastic brush. => Power drill attachment

NOTICE

Oil pump suction line blocked

- Risk of engine damage

-> The bead of sealing compound must not be thicker than => Diameter: 3 mm.

NOTICE

Incorrect handling of oil pan

- Risk of damage to transmission housing

-> Oil pan and transmission must be perfectly aligned.
-> Press oil pan firmly against the transmission when fitting it on the crankcase.

1. Apply an all-round bead of sealant to the cleaned and degreased oil pan. Apply the bead to the inside of the screw holes - arrows -.

2. Press oil pan simultaneously against the transmission and the crankcase and tighten the fastening screws by hand.
2.1. Then tighten the fastening screws in the sequence shown - i.e. from 1 to 25 -. => Tightening torque: 12 Nm (9 ftlb.)
2.2. Tighten fastening screws between transmission and oil pan. For details of tightening torque, see:=> 343527 Removing and mounting transmission - section on "Installing"

Subsequent work

Information

- The sealant must be allowed to dry for approx. 30 min after the oil pan has been assembled. Only then should you fill with engine oil.

1. Install engine carrier. => 103019 Removing and installing engine carrier - section on "Installing"
2. Install front-axle final drive.=> 39881900 Removing and installing all-wheel final drive - section on "Installing"
3. Install steering gear.=> 48901900 Removing and installing steering gear - section on "Installing"
4. Install the front-axle carrier. => 400619 Removing and installing front axle carrier
5. Install engine guard.=> 108019 Removing and installing engine guard (underbody panel) on DFI engines
6. Fit oil dipstick together with guide tube.
7. Fill in engine oil and check oil level.=> 170117 Changing engine oil and oil filter on DFI engines
8. Remove hook for workshop crane.=> 1001IN Supporting V6 3.6-litre DFI engine on the body
