Preliminary work
1. Remove engine compartment cover on the right and in the centre. => 700219 Removing and installing front trim (engine compartment) - section on "Removing"
2. Move bonnet to service position using special tool bonnet stay 9704.

NOTICE
Danger of timing chain jumping out of position
- Risk of engine damage
-> Never turn the engine at the crankshaft without a chain tensioner.
-> Never turn the crankshaft against the direction of rotation.
-> Always counter the sprockets when performing assembly work on them.
-> Make sure that nobody starts the engine or pushes the vehicle while in gear when the chain tensioner is removed. To prevent this, stick a warning note on the steering wheel or ignition lock.
1. Remove chain tensioner.
1.1. The chain tensioner is on the right side of the upper timing-case cover - arrow -.

1. Install chain tensioner.
Information
- Replace sealing ring on chain tensioner.
1.1. Always replace sealing ring on chain tensioner.
1.2. Tighten chain tensioner by hand.
1.3. Tighten the chain tensioner using a torque wrench => Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ftlb.).

Subsequent work
1. Remove special tool bonnet stay 9704 and fit the gas-filled shock absorber.
2. Install engine compartment cover on the right and in the centre.=> 700219 Removing and installing front trim (engine compartment) - section on "Installing"
