Starter Motor: Service and Repair


WM 276019 Removing and installing starter

Technical values





Preliminary work

1. Before the starter can be removed, the battery must be disconnected and the terminal covered. -> 90 Work instructions after disconnecting battery
2. Remove intake-air distributor. -> 244619 Removing and reinstalling intake-air distributor - section on "Removing" Overhaul
3. Remove fuel distribution pipe (fuel rail) on DFI engines. -> 243019 Removing and installing fuel distribution pipe (fuel rail) on DFI engines - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

Removing starter

WARNING

Risk of damage to starter

-> The battery must be properly disconnected before the electric lines are detached on the starter.





Installation position of starter

1. Undo electric change-over valve.
1.1. Pull off electric change-over valve -1- from the support -2- ( -arrow A- ) and place to one side with the lines connected.
1.2. Unscrew fastening screw -3- and remove support -2- ( -arrow B- ).

2. Unscrew fastening nuts -1 and 2- from starter and remove lines -3 and 4- ( -arrow- ).

3. Undo the two fastening screws -1-.

4. Remove the starter.
4.1. Pull starter -1- towards the front in the direction of travel -arrow A- and lift -arrow B-.
4.2. Remove line -2- ( -arrow C- ).
4.3. Lift starter -1- up and remove it -arrow D-.

Installing starter

1. Install the starter.
1.1. Insert the starter -1- from above -arrow A-.
1.2. Fit line -2- ( -arrow B- ).
1.3. Lower starter -1- ( -arrow C- ) and push into the engine housing -arrow D-.

2. Screw down starter with the fastening screws -1-. => Tightening torque: 45 Nm (33 ftlb.)+8 Nm (+6 ftlb.)

3. Position lines -3 and 4- on starter -arrow- and screw down with the fastening nuts -1 and 2-. => Tightening torque: 18 Nm (13 ftlb.) , => Tightening torque: 6.5 Nm (5 ftlb.)

4. Secure electric change-over valve.
4.1. Position support -2- ( -arrow A- ) and screw down with the fastening screw -3-. => Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
4.2. Push electric change-over valve -1- onto the support -2- ( -arrow B- ).

Subsequent work

1. Install fuel distribution pipe (fuel rail) on DFI engines. -> 243019 Removing and installing fuel distribution pipe (fuel rail) on DFI engines - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
2. Install intake-air distributor. -> 244619 Removing and reinstalling intake-air distributor - section on "Installing" Overhaul
3. Connect the battery and carry out the work instructions. -> 90 Work instructions after disconnecting battery
