Removing side airbag

WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur

-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

Information

If a new component (e.g. sensor, airbag control unit, airbag unit) of the airbag system has to be installed, the new component will be supplied with a barcode sticker (tear-off label).

- Tear off the tear-off label -2- on the new component -1- and stick it under the heading Proof of airbag system check/component replacement in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet.

- The replacement date and mileage must be documented and the booklet must be stamped with the dealer's stamp.

1. Loosen the side airbag.
1.1. Lift up the side of the seat that was loosened.

1.2. Unscrew the two fastening screws -1-.

2. Disconnect plug connections on the side airbag.
2.1. Remove the side airbag as far as required until the plug connections are accessible.
2.2. Release plug connection -1- ( -a- ) and pull it off -A-.
2.3. Pull plug connection -2- (ground) off the connector for the airbag unit.
2.4. Remove the side airbag.

Installing side airbag

1. Connect plug connections on the side airbag.
1.1. Press in connector -1- until it engages securely.
1.2. Lock the connector -1- ( -A- ).
1.3. Plug connector -2- into the connector (ground) on the airbag unit.

2. Secure the side airbag.
2.1. Lift up the side of the seat that was loosened -arrows-.

2.2. Secure the side airbag with the two new fastening screws -1-. => Tightening torque: 7 Nm (5 ftlb.)

Subsequent work for side airbag

1. Secure the front backrest cover at the inner side of the seat. -> 741919 Removing and installing cover for front backrest - section on "Installing" 741919 Removing Cover For Front Backrest.
2. Connect the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery.
