Preliminary work for rear cardan shaft

1. Remove exhaust system. -> 260119 Removing and installing exhaust system - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

NOTICE

Incorrect handling of cardan shaft

- Risk of damage to the cardan shaft
- Risk of damage to the centre bearing
- Humming noises caused by defective centre bearing

-> When one of the two flanges on the cardan shaft has been released, relieve the tension on the centre bearing.
-> Do not leave the cardan shaft hanging. Always screw in all three fastening points for transmission, centre bearing and rear final drive.
-> Follow the recommended procedures during installation, otherwise the position of the cardan shaft in its original place is no longer guaranteed.

1. Remove heat shields in cardan tunnel.

2. Mark cardan shaft at both flanges using a coloured pen.

Information

The cardan shaft must be blocked by getting an assistant to actuate the brake, or alternatively, move the selector lever to position P.

3. Unscrew fastening screws securing cardan shaft to rear final drive.

Information

The cardan shaft must be blocked by getting an assistant to actuate the brake, or alternatively, move the selector lever to position P.

4. Remove fastening screws securing cardan shaft to transmission.

Information

- To prevent the cardan shaft from being damaged, a second mechanic is required to remove the equipment.

5. Remove fastening screws at cardan shaft centre bearing.

NOTICE

Incorrect tools used for removing components

- Risk of damage to components

-> Do not use tools, such as a hammer or similar object.
-> Spray components with anti-rust agent before removing them.

- To prevent the cardan shaft from being damaged, a second mechanic is required to remove the equipment.

6. Remove cardan shaft.

NOTICE

Damaged dowel sleeve

- Leaks

-> Carefully remove and install the dowel sleeve.
-> Grease the dowel sleeve slightly during installation.
-> Transmission journal must be clean.

In the event of complaints about noises, the bolting point for the cardan shaft on the rear-axle final drive must first be moved by one position (120°) before replacing the cardan shaft.

1. Clean the thread and surface of the rear-axle final drive flange and the contact surface of the cardan flange thoroughly to remove all screw sealant.
2. Install the cardan shaft.
3. Turn cardan shaft at both flanges to the markings made before removing.

4. Fit fastening screws in centre bearing, do not tighten.

Information

The cardan shaft must be blocked by getting an assistant to actuate the brake, or alternatively, move the selector lever to position P.

5. Secure the cardan shaft to the rear final drive using new fastening screws. => Initial tightening: 30 Nm (22 ftlb.).=> Torque angle: 90°

The cardan shaft must be blocked by getting an assistant to actuate the brake, or alternatively, move the selector lever to position P.

6. Tighten the cardan shaft on the transmission using new fastening screws. => Initial tightening: 50 Nm (37 ftlb.) => Torque angle: 90°

7. Tighten fastening screws on centre bearing. => Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)

8. Install heat shields in cardan tunnel.
