Preliminary work
1. Remove bottom trim panel at the rear. -> 709219 Removing and installing tailgate trim panel - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

CAUTION
Incorrect handling of actuating cylinders
- Actuating cylinders can burst
- Risk of eye injuries
- Risk of bruising
-> The actuating cylinders must be in idle state in order to remove them.
-> Open the lid.
-> Secure the lid after removing the actuating cylinders to prevent it from closing accidentally.
-> Do not use force when opening the actuating cylinders due to the high internal pressure.
Information
Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle. Naturally, some steps also have to be performed on the opposite side of the vehicle as well. These must be carried out as a mirror image of the steps shown.
1. Open the rear lid.
2. Release electric plug connection -a- and disconnect it.

3. Secure the wire at the connector to make it easier to feed it in during installation.
3.1. Pull rubber sleeve out of the rear lid.
3.2. Guide out the connector.
4. A second person should hold the rear lid to prevent it from closing accidentally.
5. Insert a screwdriver between the actuating cylinder -2- and safety clip -1-.

6. Lift up the safety clip by levering it up with the screwdriver -A-. The safety clip remains on the actuating cylinder.
7. Pull the actuating cylinder off the ball head -B-.
Installing actuating cylinder for rear lid
1. A second person should hold the rear lid to prevent it from closing accidentally.
2. Position the actuating cylinder on the ball head and press it in -arrow-. The actuating cylinder must engage audibly.

3. Check that the safety clips have engaged correctly. The safety clip must be directly at the head of the actuating cylinder.
4. Secure the wire at the connector to make it easier to feed it in during installation.
4.1. Feed in the connector.
4.2. Install rubber sleeve in the rear lid.
5. Plug in electric plug connection until it engages securely.

6. Close the lid.
Subsequent work
1. Install bottom trim panel at the rear. -> 709219 Removing and installing tailgate trim panel - section on "Reworking" Service and Repair
Function test on actuating cylinders for rear lid
1. Open and close the lid several times to check that the actuating cylinders retract correctly and are fitted correctly.
2. Open the lid fully. The two fitted actuating cylinders must secure the lid in open position.
3. Close the lid. The lid must engage in the initial catch of the closing aid and the closing aid must then close the lid securely.
