Technical values





Preliminary work

1. Disconnect the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery
2. Remove headliner. -> 708419 Removing and installing headliner - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
3. Detach side trim panel for rear luggage compartment. -> 700319 Removing and installing side trim panel for rear luggage compartment - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

Removing head airbag unit

WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur

-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

Information

Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle. Naturally, some steps also have to be performed on the opposite side of the vehicle as well. These must be carried out as a mirror image of the steps shown.

2. Release -a- and unplug electric plug connection.

3. Unscrew two cap nuts -2- close to the C-pillar.

Information

- The fastening clips must not be damaged when removing the head airbag units.

4. Unclip eight fixing clips -3- on the head airbag unit -1-.

5. Press fixing clips together at the points -a- using a suitable tool (e.g. pointed-nose pliers) and unclip them.

6. Remove the complete head airbag unit by pulling it inwards.

If a new component (e.g. sensor, airbag control unit, airbag unit) of the airbag system has to be installed, the new component will be supplied with a barcode sticker (tear-off label).

- Tear off the tear-off label -2- on the new component -1- and stick it under the heading Proof of airbag system check/component replacement in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet.

- The replacement date and mileage must be documented and the booklet must be stamped with the dealer's stamp.

Information

Always replace the fastening screws and nuts after customer service and reworking. The micro-self-locking screws must not be treated, greased or loosened and then screwed on again.

- Make sure that the head airbag unit is not pinched.

1. Position the head airbag unit -1- and secure it with the two cap nuts -2-.

2. Position and clip in eight fixing clips on the head airbag unit.

3. Tighten the two cap nuts -2- to => Tightening torque: 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.).

4. Plug in and lock electric plug connection -a-.

1. Secure side trim panel for rear luggage compartment. -> 700319 Removing and installing side trim panel for rear luggage compartment - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
2. Install headliner. -> 708419 Removing and installing headliner - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
3. Connect the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery
