Removing rear cardan shaft
Information
- Do not kink the cardan shaft; only store it facing upwards in elongated position with the centre bearing holder.
- The cardan shaft is secured to the journal with a circlip and can be pressed off with a strong jerk.
- To prevent the cardan shaft from being damaged, a second mechanic is required to remove the rear cardan shaft.
Information
- When removing the front cardan shaft from the transfer gear only or from the front final drive only or when removing the rear cardan shaft from the rear final drive, the particular cardan shaft must be tied up or supported.
- The cardan shafts must not be repaired.
Information
The circlips on the transmission journal must always be replaced. These must be pressed on radially.
1. Unscrew the heat shield -1- and heat shield holder -2- from the tunnel support and remove the tunnel support.

Information
- Mark the positions of all parts in relation to each other prior to removal. If the parts are not re-installed in the same position, this will result in too much imbalance, which could cause damage to the mount and humming noises.
2. Mark the installation position of the damper and remove the damper

3. Mark the installation position of the cardan shaft -arrow- on the transfer gear and on the rear final drive.

Information
The circlips on the transmission journal must always be replaced. These must be pressed on radially.
1. Always replace the circlip on the transfer gear journal and rear final drive. This must be pressed on radially.
2. Fit the cardan shaft with the help of a second mechanic and screw on the centre bearing.
3. Turn the cardan shaft to the previously made marks and fit it onto the journal by jerking it but without tilting the cardan shaft.
4. Check that the cardan shaft is fitted securely by pulling on it with your hand. Then press on the shaft again in the direction of the transmission journal.
4.1. If the cardan shaft comes off when you pull it, the circlips will need to be replaced again.
5. Further assembly is carried out in reverse order to removal.
