P0342
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES P0342, P0343
Camshaft position sensor, control module input, no continuity or shorting to ground/batt+
Fault Symptoms
CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) on.
Engine performance may be down, continuous retardation of the ignition timing.
Condition
If the position sensor signal is absent or incorrect, a diagnostic trouble code will be generated. Generation of a diagnostic trouble code is conditional on the crankshaft position sensor being in perfect working order.
Diagnostic Procedure.
1. Connect an ISAT scan tool.
Start the engine.
Select "READ ON/OFF".
Select "CAMSHAFT POSITION".
The Scan Tool should show "ACTIVE".
If it does, continue with step 4.
If it does not, continue with step 2.
2. Check the electrical interface in the position sensor connector.
Unplug the 3-pin connector.
Ignition switch in the ON position.
Take the following voltage readings on the female connector:
- across pin 1 and battery negative:
^ about 12 V
- across pin 2 and battery negative
^ about 5 V
- across pin 3 and battery positive
^ about 12 V.
The above measurements should show whether the control module, including wiring and screened lead as far as the position sensor, are in good condition and functionally OK.
If all measurements are OK, fit a new camshaft position sensor.
If any measurement is not OK, continue with step 3.
3. Check The Wiring, including the screened lead, between the control module and the position sensor's 3-pin connector for continuity. Check the leads for open circuits, short circuits and any stray current.
If the results are OK, continue with step 4.
4. Clear the diagnostic trouble code and drive the car to see whether the DTC is generated again.
If the trouble code is not generated again the remedial measure taken was correct, otherwise the fault is of intermittent type.
