KNOCK SENSOR, CYLINDER BANK 2 (FRONT)

Fault Symptoms
CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) on.
Engine performance may be down, continuous retardation of the ignition
timing.

Conditions.
Engine temperature above 45°C.
Engine speed above 2000 rpm.
Voltage variations too small having regard to engine rpm.

Diagnostic Procedure.
1. Check the knock sensor's ground connection

- Unplug the knock sensor's 2-pin connector.
- Connect a test lamp to battery positive (B+) and pin 2.

The test lamp should light up.

Did the test lamp light up?

YES: Continue with point 2.
NO: Repair or replace the lead between pin 2 and crimped connection J134. Then continue with point 3.

2. Check the control module's knock sensor input

Take a resistance reading on the connector contacts (towards the control module).
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Take a resistance reading across pins 1 and 2 in the 2-pin connector.

The resistance should be about 1 Mohm.

Is the reading obtained OK?

YES: Check whether the bolt securing the knock sensor is loose.
If it is, tighten it to a torque of 22 Nm. Then continue with point 3.
If it is not loose, change the knock sensor. Then continue with point 3.

NO: Check the lead in question and repair or replace it if necessary. Then continue with point 3.

3. Final check

- Clear the diagnostic trouble code.
- Implementation of driving cycle:
^ Drive the car at varying engine loads and rpm for 5 minutes.
- Evaluation of driving cycle:
^ Check whether the diagnostic trouble code has recurred.
Has the diagnostic trouble code recurred?
YES: Continue as described at "Before Replacing a Control Module". Component Tests and General Diagnostics

NO: The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
