SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM, INCORRECT FLOW

Fault Symptom.
CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) on.

Conditions For Diagnosis
^ Secondary air injection system activated at start of this trip.
^ Diagnosis not yet performed this trip.
^ Speed = 0.
^ Idling.
^ Closed loop active.
^ Engine coolant temperature between 10 and 65°C.
^ Intake air temperature above 10°C.

Conditions For Diagnostic Trouble Code Generation
P0410 (large flow)
Closed loop greater than 25% for 20 seconds

P0411 (small flow)
Secondary air injection pump active and closed loop increases by less than 15 percentage points within 12 second.

Diagnostic Help.
The secondary air injection pump relay can be activated with the ISAT scan tool.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".

The command activates the relay at a frequency of 0.5 Hz for 30 seconds.

Check The Wiring.
Intermittent faults may occur as a result of temporary short circuits and breaks in the wiring. Jiggle the wiring at several points and in different directions to ascertain whether the wiring harness, including any connectors, is causing the trouble. Observe the multimeter, ISAT scan tool or test lamp while doing this.

Diagnostic Procedure.
1. Check the fuses

- Check the following fuses:

^ Maxi fuse 1 in the fuse box in the engine bay.
^ Fuse 13 in the fuse box in the engine bay.

Are the fuses intact?
YES: Continue with point 2.
NO: Change the fuse. Activate the secondary air injection pump relay by means of the ISAT scan tool. If the pump works, continue with point 10. If maxi fuse 1 blows when the relay is activated, continue with point 9.
If fuse 13 blows when the relay is activated, continue with point 8.

2. Check the performance of the secondary air injection pump and control valve
- Connect the ISAT Scan Tool.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".
The command activates the pump relay at a frequency of 0.5 Hz for 30 seconds.

Are the pump and control valve working?

YES: Continue with point 7.
NO: Pump and control valve both out of order. Continue with point 3.
NO: Only the pump is out of order. Continue with point 6.
NO: Only the control valve is out of order. Continue with point 8.

3. Check the relay socket's power supply

- Remove the secondary air injection pump relay.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Connect a test lamp to:
^ relay socket pin 30 and battery negative (B-).
^ relay socket pin 86 and battery negative (B-)

The test lamp should light up.

Did the test lamp light up in both cases?
YES: Continue with point 4.
NO: Check the relevant lead and repair or replace it if necessary. Then continue with point 10.

4. Check the control module output

- Connect a test lamp to pins 86 and 85 of the relay socket.
- Connect the ISAT Scan Tool.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY'.
The test lamp should flash at a frequency of 0.5 Hz for 30 seconds.

Test lamp flashing?
YES: Continue with point 5.
NO: Check the relevant lead and repair or replace it if necessary. Then continue with point 10.

5. Check the relay

- Connect a jumper lead between relay socket pins 30 and 87.

The pump and control valve should be activated.

Are the pump and control valve activated?
YES: Change the relay and continue with point 10.
NO: Pump not activated. Continue with point 6.
NO: Control valve not activated. Check The Wiring between relay socket pin 87 via fuse 13 and the control valve to crimped connection J123.
If the wiring is OK, change the control valve. Then continue with point 10.

6. Check the secondary air injection pump

- Unplug the pump's 2-pin connector.
- Connect a test lamp to pins 1 and 2 in the female connector.
- Connect a jumper lead between relay socket pins 30 and 87.

Did the test lamp light up?
YES: Change the pump and continue with point 10.
NO: Check and if necessary repair or replace the lead between:

^ relay socket pin 87 and pin 2 of the pump's 2-pin connector.
^ Pin 2 of the 2-pin connector and grounding point G30.
Then continue with point 10.

7. Check the hose system

- Disconnect one of the hoses connected to the exhaust manifold's non-return valves.
- Remove the hose between the intake manifold and the secondary air injection control valve and connect a vacuum pump to the hose.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".
- The pump should work but it should not blow air into the thick hose.
- Use the vacuum pump to build up a vacuum.

The pump should now blow air into the hose.

Is the system OK?
YES: Check that all hoses are correctly fitted. Then continue with point 10.
NO: If the control valve is tight, change it. If the control valve opens, change the vacuum valve.
Then continue with point 10.

8. Check the secondary air injection control valve
- Unplug the control valve's 2-pin connector.
- Connect a test lamp to pins 2 and 1 of the connector.
- Connect the ISAT Scan Tool.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".
The test lamp should flash at a frequency of 0.5 Hz for 30 seconds.

Test lamp flashing?
YES: Change the control valve. Then continue with point 10.
NO: Check The Wiring between pin 87 of the relay socket via fuse 13 to crimped connection J123. Repair or replace it if necessary and then continue with point 10.

9. Check the secondary air injection pump for shorting

- Unplug the pump's 2-pin connector.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".

Did the fuse blow again?
YES: Check and if necessary repair or replace the wiring between maxi fuse 1 and pin 2 of the pump's 2-pin connector.
NO: Change the secondary air injection pump.

10. Final check

Use the ISAT scan tool to activate diagnosis of the secondary air injection system. For diagnosis to be possible, the following conditions must be fulfilled:
^ Secondary air injection system activated at start of this trip.
^ Diagnosis not yet performed this trip.
^ Speed = 0.
^ Idling.
Carry out diagnosis:
- Connect the ISAT Scan Tool.
- Clear the fault codes.
- Select "INITIATE".
- Select "SLS DIAGNOSIS".
- Wait for about two minutes or until the ISAT scan tool reads "READY".
- Obtain a readout of the diagnostic trouble code.

Has the diagnostic trouble code recurred?
YES: Continue as described at "Before Replacing a Control Module". Component Tests and General Diagnostics
NO: The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
