Flywheel: Service and Repair
Sealing flanges and flywheel/drive plate, removing and installing
1. Oil seal
^ To remove oil seal, remove sealing flange
^ Install with 10203
^ Lightly oil sealing lip
2. Woodruff key
^ Ensure tight fit
3. 25 Nm
4. Sealing flange
5. Gasket
^ Always replace
6. Cylinder block
^ * Removing and installing crankshaft
Refer to Engine.
^ Disassembling and assembling pistons and conrods, Refer to Engine.
7. 60 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°) further
^ Always replace
8. Dual-mass flywheel/drive plate
^ Lock with 3067 to remove and install flywheel
^ Removing and installing drive plate
9. Intermediate plate
^ Must be located on dowel sleeves
^ Do not damage/bend when assembling
10. 10 Nm
11. Sealing flange with oil seal
^ Only replace complete
^ Lightly oil sealing lip of oil seal
12. Oil seal
^ Replacing
13. Intermediate shaft
^ Axial clearance max. 0.25 mm
14. O-ring
^ Replace if damaged
15. Sealing flange intermediate shaft
Drive plate, removing and installing
Special tools and equipment
^ Counter-hold tool VW 558
^ Hex bolt M8 x 45 and two M10 hex nuts
^ Depth gauge
Loosening and tightening drive plate
- Secure counter-hold tool VW 558 to drive plate with hex bolt M8 x 45. Place two M10 hex nuts between counter-hold tool and drive plate.
Position of counter-hold tool:
A - To loosen
B - To tighten
Installing drive plate
- Locate drive plate and packing plate with recesses -1-.
- Install new bolts and tighten to 30 Nm.
- Calculate dimension -a- at three points and calculate average.
^ Specification: 26 to 28 mm
If the specification is not attained:
- Remove drive plate again and install shim -2. Tighten bolts again to 30 Nm.
- Tighten bolts to 60 Nm and turn 90° (1/4 turn) further (additional turn can be done in several stages).
