Removing
- Only if there are no marks, mark position of rear drive shaft sections on constant velocity joints with paint (arrows -A- and -B-).
- Disconnect drive shaft from rear final drive and tie up.
- Place VAG1383 A engine/transmission jack with 1359/2 universal transmission mount under rear final drive to support
- Remove rear final drive bearing bracket securing bolts (arrows).
- Carefully lower rear final drive until flange is accessible.
- Mark position of pinion securing nut with paint.
Determining dimensions -a- and -b-
a - Distance of flange to pinion
b - Distance of flange to pinion securing nut
- Note measurements.
- Install 3028 retainer and screw on securing nut for pinion.
Note: Reuse original nut to secure flange to pinion. Otherwise the original installation position cannot be determined again.
- Pull off flange using VW391 puller.
- Install two bolts -A- (M8 x 30) into flange.
- Place drip tray underneath.
- Pull out seal.
Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal, when installing note the following:
- Always replace O-ring behind flange.
- Drive new seal in up to stop. When doing this do not cant seal.
- Lubricate space between sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.
- Drive drive shaft flange onto pinion until securing nut can be installed.
- Clean threads on drive pinion and flange nut free of grease and coat thinly with D 000 600.
- Install original nut and tighten to position marked.
- Carry out check measurement from determining dimensions -a- and -b-.
Deviations from measurements must not be more than 0.5 mm.
- Secure nut.
- Check rear final drive oil level and if necessary top onto lower edge of filler hole.

- If position of drive shaft to drive shaft flange was marked before removal, reinstall drive shaft in same position. Service and Repair
- If marks are present on drive shaft, determine radial run-out at drive shaft flange. Testing and Inspection
- Install drive shaft to rear final drive. Service and Repair
