Clutch Disc: Service and Repair
Clutch, servicing
Special tools and and misc. equipment required
3067 Counter hold tool
3176 Centering mandrel
VAG1331 Torque wrench
Transmission removed
Notes: Replace clutch plates and pressure plates with damaged or loose rivets
Select correct clutch plate and pressure plate according to parts list and engine code.
Clutch illustrated in conjunction with dual mass flywheel
1. Flywheel
Ensure centering pins are a tight fit
Contact surface for clutch lining must be free of grooves, oil and grease
If white spots are present on flywheel -A- and pressure plate -B, align them during assembly
Removing and installing, refer to Manual Transmission/Transaxle - Flywheel - Service and Repair - Procedures
2. Clutch plate
Diameter, refer to Clutch, M/T - Application and ID Application and ID
Installation position with two part flywheel: the clutch plate lining must contact the flywheel
Installation position without two-part flywheel: spring cage faces the pressure plate
Centering see Fig. 1
Lightly grease splines
Note: Clean input shaft splines and on used clutch plates, the hub splines, remove corrosion and apply only a very thin coating of grease Part No: G 000100 to the input shaft splines. Then move clutch plate to and fro on input shaft unto hub moves freely on shaft. Excess grease must be removed.
3. Pressure plate
Removing and installing see Fig. 1
Check ends of diaphragm spring see Fig. 2
If white spots are present on flywheel -A- and pressure plate -B-, align them during assembly
Note: Pressure plates are protected against corrosion and greased. Only the contact surface may be cleaned, otherwise the service life of the clutch will be considerably reduced.
4. Bolt, 25 Nm
Loosen and tighten gradually and diagonally
5. Needle roller bearing
Driving in and out, refer to Pilot Bearing - Service and Repair - Procedures Service and Repair
Fig. 1 Centering clutch plate and removing and installing pressure plate
- Loosen and tighten bolts gradually and diagonally.
- Reverse position of counter-hold when removing.
- If there are white spots on the dual mass flywheel -A- and pressure plate -B-, make sure that they line up when you assemble them.
Note: The pressure plate contact surface and the clutch plate lining must make full contact with the flywheel. Tighten securing bolts diagonally and evenly so as to prevent damage to the pressure plate centralizing hole and the flywheel centralizing pins.
Fig. 2 Checking ends of the diaphragm spring
- Wear up to half the thickness of the diaphragm spring is permitted.
