Radiator: Service and Repair
Radiator
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Refractometer (T10007)
• Drip tray (VAG 1306) or drip tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Spring type clip pliers (VAS 5024A)
• Cooling system charge unit (VAS 6096)
• Adapter (VAG 1274/8)
Removing
CAUTION!
Hot steam may escape when opening the expansion tank cap. Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to eyes and scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open very carefully.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to --> [ Draining and Filling ] [1][2]Cooling System, Draining and Filling.
- Bring the lock carrier into the service position. Lock Carrier, Service Position
- Disconnect the coolant hoses from the radiator at the top and bottom (quick acting couplings).
- Remove the intake air elbow with coolant fans. Refer to --> [ Cooling Fans ] Service and Repair.
- Remove the bumper cover guide piece on the left and right.
- Remove the air guide bolts - arrows - from the lock carrier.
• To prevent damage to the condenser and also to the refrigerant lines/hoses, ensure that the lines and hoses are not stretched, kinked or bent.
- Remove the bolts - 1 - from radiator brackets.
- Swing the radiator slightly toward the rear.
- Remove the condenser bolts - 2 -.
- Remove the bolt - arrow - for the refrigerant line bracket.
- Remove the radiator up and out.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:
• Replace the coolant if a new radiator was installed.
• Fill the cooling system. Refer to --> [ Draining and Filling ] [1][2]Cooling System, Draining and Filling.
