SIPS bag in the front seat, replacing
SIPS bag detonated or service replacement

Preparations
Warning! The SIPS bag must not be repaired. The SIPS bag is always replaced as a complete unit, consisting of sensor unit, igniter cable and cushion module.
Note! When replacing the upholstery on the backrest, use Volvo original seat upholstery or seat upholstery for SIPS bag approved by Volvo.
If the SIPS bag has not detonated
First secure the SIPS bag
- Fold up the seat compartment. Lift up the front edge and press the compartment backward.
- Remove the transport lock from the holder on the inside of the seat compartment.
- Install the transport lock on the sensor unit.
Remove front seat
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.
Remove:
- Seat compartment (A). Lift up the front edge and push backward.
- Seat belt from the seat mounting (bolt outside seat).
- Panel (B) over front edge runner
- 4 securing bolts (C) on runners
- Disconnect the connector to the heater element (under the seat cushion)
- Disconnect the connector to the seat belt lock (under the seat cushion)
Lift the seat straight up (guide pins at the front and rear).
Remove the backrest seat upholstery
- Loosen the backrest from the seat cushion (3 screws on each side of the seat)
- Remove the knob to adjust the backrest incline (2). (The knob is placed underneath the seat.)
- Remove the knob for the lumbar support adjustment (1). Unscrew anticlockwise until it stops. Continue to screw anticlockwise and pull firmly outward at the same time. (The knob is placed on the inside of the seat.)
- Remove the clips (use side cutters) on the outside and inside between the upholstery and filling.
- Pull off the upholstery.
Remove the SIPS bag from the seat
Release the igniter cable
Note how the igniter cable is routed and where the cable ties are placed.
- Cut the cable ties (2).
- Disconnect the igniter cable from the clips.
Remove the SIPS bag cushion module
Remove the cushion module from the backrest frame as follows:
- Remove the 2 screws, Torx 25.
- Remove the cushion module.
Remove the sensor unit
Remove the sensor unit from the front SIPS-pipe as follows:
- Remove the screw, Torx 25.
- Remove the pressure plate.
- Remove the sensor unit
- Let the clips remain on the SIPS-pipe's sensor housing.
Remove the SIPS bag from the seat
- Remove the complete SIPS bag (i.e. sensor unit, igniter cable and cushion module) from the seat.
Assemble the SIPS bag in the seat.
First check that the new SIPS bag is secured with the transport lock fitted on the sensor unit.
Install the sensor unit
Install the sensor unit in the front SIPS-pipe.
- The clips shall remain on the SIPS-pipe's sensor housing.
- Install the sensor unit
- Install the pressure plate.
- With repair or collision; Replace with a new pressure plate.
- With service replacement: Use the existing pressure plate.
- Install screw Torx 25.
Install the SIPS bag cushion module
Install the cushion module on the backrest frame:
- Install the cushion module.
- Install 2 screws Torx 25.
If the SIPS bag has detonated, the securing screws for the cushion module are to be replaced with new screws. Use screws of the same type and quality as before. Tightening torque cushion module: 2.9 Nm
Install the igniter cable
Install the igniter cable and cable ties according to the previous placement:
- Fit the igniter cable in the clips.
- Install the 2 cable ties.
Install the backrest seat upholstery
- Assemble the seat upholstery in the reverse order to Remove the backrest seat upholstery.
Start by securing the clamps in the backrest in between the upholstery and filling.
Use special pliers P/N 115 8962 CRIMP PLIERS 115 8962 Crimp Pliers to secure the clamps.
Caution! When replacing the upholstery on the backrest, use Volvo original seat upholstery or seat upholstery for SIPS bag approved by Volvo.
Install the front seat
- Assemble the seat in the reverse order to Front seat with prefitted SIPS bag, replacing Front Seat With Prefitted SIPS Bag, Replacing.
Note! The outer, rear fastening bolt (C) is tightened last. Otherwise the seat will be secured askew.
After a collision; also replace the seat compartment.
Tighten to:
Seats/floor: 40 Nm
Belt: 20 Nm
When the front seat is in position
Do not forget to unlock the SIPS bag!
- Remove the transport lock on the sensor unit.
- Fit the transport lock from the holder on the inside of the seat compartment.
- Install the seat compartment.
- Change to the decal with the new date for the SIPS bag left and/or right side. Placed on the driver's side B-pillar
The decal is supplied with the new SIPS- bag unit.
