Removal and Replacement






Transmission cable, replacing

Preparations




Park the car on a flat surface. Do not apply the parking brake.
Remove:
- The air cleaner (ACL) housing
- The battery
- The battery shelf





Remove:
- Circlip and washer on the lever
- Nuts and washers on the cable bracket.

Note! There are no washers on late designs.

- Gear cable from the lever

Removing the center console





Remove:
- Cigarette lighter panel (2 screws)
- Washer under the handbrake lever
- Cover for the glove compartment.





Loosen the connectors for the tunnel bracket.
Remove the 4 screws and remove the bracket.

Removing the transmission cable




Disconnect the gear cable from the gear selector assembly.
Pull out the cable shaft with a pliers.
Remove the circlip holding the cable casing in the gear selector assembly.





Fold back the mat and remove the side panel. Remove the nuts for the cable bushing in the bulkhead.
Cars with key lock only
Loosen the key lock cable form the gear cable.
Remove the gear cable.

Installing the gearbox cable

Note! Be careful not to damage the cable or its casing by sharp bends. Take care with the cable boot.




Align the cable in the gear selector assembly.
Install:
- the cable bushing in the bulkhead. Torque 6 Nm .
- cable casing in the gear selector assembly and circlip.
- cable to the selector lever with spindle.
Cars with key lock only: Secure the key lock cable to the gear cable.
Install the side panel.
Fold the carpet back

Installing the center console




- 4 x screws
- Connectors (black, grey)
- Cover for the glove compartment
- Washer under the handbrake lever
- Cigarette lighter panel
Adjust and fit the cable on the gearbox according to the following item.

Adjusting the gear cable

Move the gear shift lever to R-position

Note! Make sure that the gear cable can run freely in the engine compartment.





Press the lever on the gearbox forward to the P-position.

Note! Do not touch the gear cable. The position of the gear-shift selector must not change.

Check the P-position by trying to roll the car.
Now move the lever to the next position (R-position).
Apply a small amount of grease 1161241-3 to the lever's spindle.

Note! Take care not to change the position of the lever.





Carefully fit the cable on the lever spindle and on the stud bolts.
Make sure the position of the gear shift lever and the lever do not change!
Fit washers (only early design) and nuts.
Tighten the nuts by hand and crosswise. Now tighten with torque 25 Nm .
Fit the washer and circlip on the lever.

Check
Place the lever in the N-position. Push the lever forward without touching the shift lock button. The play should be obvious.
Place the lever in the D-position. Push the lever backward without touching the shift lock button. The play should be obvious.

Finishing





Install:
- The air cleaner (ACL) housing
- The battery shelf
- The battery. Connect the cables.
