Drive shafts, removing

Special tools:

Note! The following chapters dealing with drive shafts also apply to cars with automatic transmission. If nothing else is indicated in text or figure, the methods are the same for cars with manual transmission and for cars with automatic transmission. The figures show mainly drive shafts for cars with manual transmission. The method is the same for left and right drive shaft unless otherwise indicated.

Caution! Take care not to damage the sealing ring in the transmission or the boot on the drive shaft.

Remove:




- the front wheel.
- the ABS-sensor from the wheel spindle.

Note! Do not separate the connector halves!

Loosen the bracket for the brake pipe and the ABS-cable.




- Unhook the bracket and let it hang free.

Remove the drive shaft nut.
- Tap up the lock for the drive shaft nut.
- Install counterhold 999 5461 COUNTERHOLD 999 5461 Counterhold (4 wheel bolts) or counterhold 999 5540 COUNTERHOLD 999 5540 Counterhold (5 wheel bolts) and remove the nut.
Loosen the drive shaft end in the hub. Tap in the shaft end approx. 10-15 mm . Use a plastic or copper mallet.

Remove:




- the link from the anti-roll bar.
- the nuts that hold the link arm/ball joint.
Unhook the link arm from the ball joint. Be careful with the ball joint's gaiter!

The following applies if only the right drive shaft is to be removed:
- Remove the splash guard under the engine. (Only earlier version.)

Remove the drive shaft from the hub.




Turn and fold out the spring strut. Tap on the drive shaft's end with a plastic or copper mallet and pull out the drive shaft from the hub.
Clean the splined joint (hub-drive shaft) from metal adhesive.

Right drive shaft:




- Remove the bearing cap from the support bearing for the drive shaft.
- Pull out the drive shaft from the transmission.

Left drive shaft:




- Remove the drive shaft from the transmission. Use pry tool 999 5462 Jimmy tool 999 5462 Jimmy Tool to pry between the transmission and the drive shaft's inside. (Tool 999 5462 Jimmy tool 999 5462 Jimmy Tool is changed according to tool bulletin.)
Clean the splined joint (hub-drive shaft) from metal adhesive.
