Drive Shaft Right, Replacing






Replacing the front right drive shaft

Preparatory work

Draining oil

Note! Only applies to cars with 4T65AWD transmissions.

Drain the transmission fluid. See Transmission Fluid, Replacing

Removal

Removing the drive shaft from the wheel hub
To remove the drive shaft from the wheel hub, see Replacing the front left drive shaft Drive Shaft Left, Replacing.

Removing the splash guard





Note! Only applies to cars with AW55-50, AW50AWD or M66AWD transmissions.

Remove the splash guard under the engine.

Draining transmission fluid





Note! Only applies to cars with M66AWD transmissions.

Collect the oil in a container.
Remove the drain plug. Drain the oil. Install the plug with a new gasket. Tighten. See Transmission Fluid, Replacing

Removing the drive shaft





Note! Only applies to cars with AW55-50, AW50AWD or M66AWD transmissions.

Remove the bearing cap for the drive shaft.
Hold down the spring strut. Pull out the drive shaft.

Removing the drive shaft, continued





Note! Only applies to cars with 4T65AWD transmissions.

Detach the drive shaft. Use jimmy bar 999 5462 Jimmy tool 999 5462 Jimmy Tool B (modified according to the Tool Bulletin). Hold the spring strut out of the way and remove the drive shaft. Do not damage the sealing ring in the chain housing when removing the drive shaft.

Installing the drive shaft

Installing the drive shaft in the transmission





Note! Only applies to cars with 4T65AWD transmissions.

Lubricate the mating surface of the drive shaft. Use oil P/N 116 1745-3 (1 liter container).
Press the drive shaft into the transmission. Check that the snap ring is in the groove in the transmission.
Pull the constant velocity joint to check that the drive shaft is secure.

Note! Do not pull the drive shaft as the axial pinions cannot support large loads.

Note! Only applies to cars with AW55-50, AW50AWD or M66AWD transmissions.

Install the drive shaft and bearing cap. Use two M8 screws. Tighten.

Filling with oil

Note! Only applies to cars with M66AWD transmissions.

Top up with new oil.

Installing the splash guard





Note! Only applies to cars with AW55-50, AW50AWD or M66AWD transmissions.

Install the splashguard under the engine.

Installing wheels
Install the wheel. See Installing wheels Service and Repair.

Finishing

Filling and checking the oil level

Note! Only applies to cars with 4T65AWD transmissions.

Fill through the dip stick pipe. Fill with as much new oil as was drained from the transmission.

Note! Oil grade: Only ATF fluid Dexron III (with G-license). Transmission oil, Volvo P/N 116 1521-8 (1 liter container), 116 1621-6 (4 liter container).
