Rear Drive Axle






Rear drive axle

Preparatory work

Removing the rear wheels
Remove the rear wheel on the relevant side.

Removal

Removing the parking brake cable





Caution! Make sure to not break/bend the parking brake cable.

Remove the parking brake cable from the brake caliper.

Disconnecting the brake caliper





Note! Since the brake shoes are still in place, do not press in the parking brake arm or the wheel brakes when the caliper is hanging loose.

Remove the brake hose from the bracket. Remove the brake caliper.
Hang up the caliper in a suitable position in the wheel arch.

Hint: Place the parking brake cable on the caliper.

Removing the brake disc





Remove:
- the 1 screw for the drive shaft
- the 1 retaining clip
- the brake disc.

Removing the hub





Remove:
- the 4 screws
- the hub and the protective plate.

Removing the drive shaft




Use 999 7160 Key 999 7160 Key as a wedge and use a sledgehammer to drive the drive shaft out from the final drive.
Remove the drive shaft.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques, see Specifications. Tightening Torque

Installing the drive shaft in the final drive

Note! Always use a new lock ring on the end of the drive shaft.

Caution! Do not pull on the drive shaft. The axial stops cannot handle the large load.

Press the drive shaft into the final drive. Check that the snap ring is in the groove by pulling the constant velocity joint.

Installing the hub





Install:
- the hub and the protective plate
- the 4 M10 screws. Tighten. See: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.

Preparations for installing the brake disc

Note! Cleaning is important to prevent lateral run-out of the brake disc.

Clean the hub flange before installing the brake disc.
Check the hub. Measure the lateral runout if the hub is damaged. See: Wheel hub rear, checking Wheel Hub Rear, Checking.

Installing the brake disc





Caution! Be careful when handling the brake disc. Careless handling can cause damage to the brake disc (out-of-round).

Install:
- the brake disc
- the 1 retaining clip
- the screw for the drive shaft. Use a new screw.

Installing the brake caliper




Install the brake hose in the bracket. Install the brake caliper. Use 2 M10 screws. Tighten. See: Tightening torque Tightening Torque.

Installing the parking brake cable





Caution! Make sure to not break/bend the parking brake cable.

Install the parking brake cable in the brake caliper.

Tightening the screw for the drive shafts
Tighten the screw for the drive shaft. See: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.

Hint: Counterhold by applying the parking brake.

Installing wheels
Install the wheel. See: Wheels Service and Repair.
