Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair






Steering wheel lock, replacing

Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Preparation
Pull down the steering wheel adjustment lever and pull up the steering wheel to the uppermost position.

Removing the steering column covers




Remove the ignition key (1).
Remove the three screws (2).
Press in the snap fasteners and remove the lower steering column cover (3).
Pull up the upper steering column cover (4).

Removing the steering wheel lock unit




Disconnect the connectors.
Press in the snap fastener and remove the steering wheel lock unit.

Removing the mechanical cable for the ignition switch interlock (only applies to cars with automatic transmissions)




Remove the ignition switch interlock cable.
Move the ignition key to position I.
Press up the lock facing and pull out the cable.

Removing the connectors on the Steering Wheel Module (SWM)




Disconnect the connectors on the gear selector assembly.

Removing the steering wheel lock




Drill out the security screws holding the steering wheel lock.

Hint: Use an angle drill.

Remove the steering wheel lock.

Installing the steering wheel lock




Insert the ignition key in the new steering wheel lock.
Check that the key is in position I and that the locking lug on the steering wheel lock is down.
Install the new steering wheel lock against the cap on the steering column.
Install the new security screws.
Tighten the security screws until the screw heads break off.

Installing the connectors on the Steering Wheel Module (SWM)




Install the connectors on the gear selector assembly.

Installing the mechanical cable for the ignition switch interlock (only applies to cars with automatic transmissions)




Set the gear selector lever to P position.
Move the ignition key to position I.
Press the cable into the ignition switch and feel to see that it sits correctly.
Remove the ignition key and check that the gear selector lever is blocked in P position.

Installing the steering wheel lock unit




Remove the ignition key.

Install:
- the connectors
- the steering lock module.

Installing the steering column covers




Install the lower steering column cover.

Note! Ensure that the no cables are trapped.

Install the screws for the lower steering column cover.
Fold down the upper steering column cover and press the snap fasteners into place in the lower steering column cover.

Note! Ensure that the gaiters around the control levers are correctly positioned against the column covers.

Finishing
Adjust the steering wheel setting and lock the steering wheel adjustment lever.
Use VIDA vehicle communication to check that no diagnostic trouble codes have been stored during the work.

Ordering software/keys

Note! To enable adding a key, a key and software must be ordered. Only software must be ordered to enable erasing a key.

Order a key and/or software. See 8691258.

Note! When key and/or software is available, then programming/erasing can be performed.

The function must be checked if a new key has been added.

Function test
Test start the engine.
