Front Subframe: Service and Repair






Sub-frame front, replacing

Special tools:

Removal

Preparatory work
Remove the front wheels on both sides.

Removing the bolts to the torque rod




Remove the 2 x screws by the suspension turret on both sides.

Installing the lifting tool





Remove:
- the oil filler cap
- the upper front engine casing by pulling it straight up

Caution! When lifting the engine ensure that the lifting eye does not scratch the torque rod. Tape the torque rod and keep it away from the eye.

Install:
- the oil filler cap
- the lifting tool: 999 5716 Reading off tool 999 5716 Reading Off Tool converted with kit 999 7070 Mounting 999 7070 Mounting and the lifting hooks: 999 5460 Lifting hook 999 5460 Lifting Hook. Lift up the engine slightly so that the engine pads are unloaded.

Removing the wing liner





Remove:
- the plastic nuts, x2
- the wing liner.

Removing the screws for the right-hand engine pad




Remove the bolts (1), x2.

Removing the protective plate




Remove the 6 screws.





Note! The plate's upper mounting has a guide sleeve and therefore it must be lifted slightly so that it can be slid forward.

Raise and move the protective plate forward. Remove the protective plate.

Removing the protective cover under the engine





Remove:
- the bolts, x6
- the protective cover under the engine.

Removing the gearbox bolts to the lower torque rod




Remove the bolts, x2.

Removing the exhaust pipes between front and rear catalytic converters





Remove:
- both exhaust pipes' nuts
- both exhaust pipes.

Removing the lower bolt to the front engine pad




Remove the lower bolt to the engine pad.

Removing the anti-roll bar link from the anti-roll bar on both sides




Remove the anti-roll bar links from the anti-roll bar on both sides. Use: 999 5500 SOCKET UPPER NUT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER 999 5500 Socket Upper Nut Rear Shock Absorber and a Torx wrench as counterhold to avoid damaging the rubber gaiter.

Removing the drive shaft




Remove the bolt for the drive shaft. Use a screwdriver in the brake disc as counterhold. Tap the drive shaft into the hub slightly. Use a brass drift.

Removing the link arm from the wheel spindle on both sides




Remove the bolt to the link arm. Use a Torx wrench as counterhold to avoid damaging the rubber gaiter.
Loosen the ball joint pin from the link arm. Use: 999 7062 Separator 999 7062 Separator.
Fit the cap nut, 7062-1, for the ball joint pin. Tighten the nut against the link arm. Then turn back one turn so that clearance is created between the cap nut and link arm. Place the puller on the link arm and loosen the ball joint from the link arm.




Detach the link arm from the ball joint pin.
Pull down the link arm. Use: 999 7076 Lever 999 7076 Lever and move the wheel spindle to the side, and install the protective sleeve: 999 5562 PROTECTIVE SOCKET 999 5562 Protective Socket on the ball joint pin at the same time. Keep it in position using the ball joint nut.

Removing the steering gear from the subframe





Remove:
- the nuts, x4
- the bolt, x1.

Removing the subframe





Caution! Ensure that no pipes or cables are under load or are trapped when lowering the sub-frame.

Release:
- the 2 x heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connectors from the rear edge of the subframe
- the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connector from the front edge of the subframe.
Remove the bolt to the ground cable bracket on the front edge of the subframe.
Position a lifting table under the subframe.

Remove:
- the bolts to the subframe's brackets at the rear edge
- the bolts to the subframe in the front and rear edge
- the subframe's brackets.
Release the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) cables from the anti-roll bar.
Remove the lower coolant hose from the bracket on the subframe.
Lower the subframe carefully. Release the oil pipes to the steering gear from the clips on the subframe.
Remove the bolt to the bracket holding the pressure pipe to the steering gear on the subframe.

Transferring the components.




Transfer the link arms on both sides.

Install:
- the 2 x front screws to the control arms. Tighten. See: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications
- the rear screw to the control arms. Tighten. See Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.
Transfer the anti-roll bar. Fit the bolts to the anti-roll bar, M10 x4.
Transfer the right-hand engine pad.
Fit the bolts to the engine pad, x2, in accordance with: Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque.
Install a new lower torque rod with the nuts. See Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque.
Install new pipe/hose holder. Transfer the bracket to the lower coolant hose. Install an M6 screw in the bracket.

Installation

Installing the subframe

Caution! Ensure that no pipes or cables are loaded or trapped when raising the sub-frame.

Raise the subframe.

Install:
- the oil pipes to the steering gear in the clips on the subframe
- the bolt, M6, to the bracket holding the pressure pipe to the steering gear on the subframe
- the lower coolant hose in the bracket on the sub-frame.
Install the sub-frame's four screws together with the sub-frame's brackets and engine heater, if installed.
Use new screws. Lube the screws with oil.
Tighten acc. to: Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque. First tighten the screws on the sub-frame's left side, then on the right.
Tighten the screws for the brackets M10.
Install the heated oxygen sensor's cables on the anti-roll bar.
Remove the lifting table.

Install:
- the 2 x heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connectors on the rear edge of the subframe
- the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connector on the front edge of the subframe
- the M6 screw to the ground cable mounting on the front edge of the subframe.

Installing the steering gear on the subframe

Install:
- the nuts, M10 x4.
- the M10 screw.

Fitting the lower bolt to the front engine pad
Install the lower M10 screw for the engine pad.

Installing the gearbox bolts to the lower torque rod
Install the 2 x screws. Tighten. See: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications.

Installing the exhaust pipes between front and rear catalytic converters

Note! To ensure that there is no exhaust leakage, see: Flanged joint, assembling Flanged Joint, Assembling.

Install:
- both exhaust pipes
- both exhaust pipes' nuts, M8.

Installing the link arm on both sides

Install:
- the link arm. Use: 999 7076 Lever 999 7076 Lever.
- the nut. Tighten. See Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications. Counterhold using a Torx wrench to prevent damaging the ball joint boot.

Installing the anti-roll bar link on both sides

Install:
- the anti-roll bar link
- the nut. Tighten acc. to: Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications. Use socket 999 5500 SOCKET UPPER NUT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER 999 5500 Socket Upper Nut Rear Shock Absorber and a Torx wrench as a counterhold to prevent damaging the rubber gaiter.

Installing the drive shaft
Fit the bolt on both sides.
Use a screwdriver as counterhold.

Installing the protective cover under the engine

Install:
- the protective cover under the engine
- the bolts, M8 x6.

Installing the protective plate
Move the skid plate up into the bumper cover. Press forward until the mounting brackets enter the sub-frame. Install the screws.

Fitting the bolts to the right-hand engine pad
Install the 2 x screws. Tighten. See: Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque.

Installing the wing liner

Install:
- the wing liner
- the plastic nuts, x2.

Removing the lifting tool
Remove the lifting tool 999 5716 Reading off tool 999 5716 Reading Off Tool , kit: 999 7070 Mounting 999 7070 Mounting and lifting hooks: 999 5460 Lifting hook 999 5460 Lifting Hook.

Fitting the bolts to the torque rod
Install the 2 x M10 screws, by the suspension turret on both sides.

Finishing
Install the front wheels on both sides. See Installing wheels Service and Repair.
Remove the oil filler cap.

Install:
- the upper front engine casing
- the oil filler cap. Carry out wheel alignment in accordance with: Wheel alignment, checking / adjusting Service and Repair.
