Instrument Panel Tie Bar Replacement
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to SIR Handling Caution in Cautions and Notices.
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
1. Remove the instrument panel trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Trim Pad Replacement (Impala) (Instrument Panel (IP) - Trim Pad Replacement)Instrument Panel Trim Pad Replacement (Monte Carlo) (Instrument Panel (IP) - Trim Pad Replacement).
2. Disconnect the fuse blocks from the cross vehicle beam.
3. Remove the instrument panel/right air distribution duct and the instrument panel/left/center air distribution duct. Refer to Auxiliary Air Distributor Duct Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
4. Disconnect the wiring harness from the knee bolster.
5. Remove the passenger knee bolster bracket. Refer to Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement (Driver) (Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement - Driver)Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement (Passenger) (Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement - Passenger).
6. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
7. Position the body control module away from the cross vehicle beam.
8. Remove the stoplamp switch. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
9. Remove the cruise release switch. Refer to Cruise Control Release Switch Replacement in Cruise Control.
10. Disconnect the booster push rod from the brake pedal.
11. Remove the brake pedal bolt and the brake pedal. Refer to Brake Pedal Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
12. Remove the brake pedal brace bolts from the cross vehicle beam. Refer to Brake Pedal Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
13. Disconnect any ground wires, as necessary.
14. Reposition the IP wiring harness.
15. Remove the bracket bolts from the HVAC module center support.
16. Reposition the vacuum harness.
17. Remove the bracket from the HVAC module center support.
18. Remove the brackets bolts from the HVAC module upper support.
19. Remove the right and the left cross vehicle beam bolts.
20. Reposition the cross vehicle beam.
21. Remove the right/defrost IP air duct from the cross vehicle beam. Refer to Auxiliary Air Distributor Duct Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the right/defrost IP air duct to the cross vehicle beam. Refer to Auxiliary Air Distributor Duct Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
2. Install the cross vehicle beam to the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
3. Install the right and the left cross vehicle beam bolts in sequence.
Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
4. Install the bolts to the HVAC module upper support bracket.
Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb in).
5. Install the bracket to the HVAC module center support.
6. Install the bracket bolts in sequence to the HVAC module center support.
Tighten the bolts in sequence to 10 Nm (89 lb in).
7. Reposition the vacuum harness to the original position.
8. Reposition the IP wiring harness to the original position.
9. Connect any disconnected ground wires.
10. Install the brake pedal brace bolts to the cross vehicle beam. Refer to Brake Pedal Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
11. Install the brake pedal and the brake pedal bolt. Refer to Brake Pedal Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
12. Install the booster push rod to the brake pedal.
13. Install the cruise release switch. Refer to Cruise Control Release Switch Replacement in Cruise Control.
14. Install the stoplamp switch. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
15. Install the body control module.
16. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
17. Install the bracket to the passenger knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement (Driver) (Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement - Driver)Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement (Passenger) (Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement - Passenger).
18. Install the fuse blocks to the cross vehicle beam.
19. Install the IP/right air distribution duct and the IP/left/center air distribution duct. Refer to Auxiliary Air Distributor Duct Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
20. Install the IP trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Trim Pad Replacement (Impala) (Instrument Panel (IP) - Trim Pad Replacement)Instrument Panel Trim Pad Replacement (Monte Carlo) (Instrument Panel (IP) - Trim Pad Replacement).
