Preliminary work

Safety instructions for passenger airbag unit

WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur

-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

- Danger of injury
- Loss of torque

-> Always use new fastening screws and nuts following removal.
-> Observe specified tightening torques.
-> Carry out a visual inspection of all re-used parts.

Information

Always replace the fastening screws on the airbag unit after customer service and reworking. The micro-self-locking screws must not be treated, greased or loosened and then screwed on again.

1. Unscrew the six fastening screws -2- for the airbag unit on the dashboard.

2. Unscrew the two fastening screws -1- from the L-bracket and carefully pull the airbag unit down a few centimetres out of the mounting by tilting it.

3. With a screwdriver, carefully lever out the locking element of the two electric plug connections and unplug connections from the airbag unit.

4. Remove airbag unit in a downward direction and lay it to one side in the appropriate manner.

Installing passenger's airbag unit

Information

If a new component (e.g. sensor, airbag control unit, airbag unit) of the airbag system has to be installed, the new component will be supplied with a barcode sticker (tear-off label).

- Tear off the tear-off label -2- on the new component -1- and stick it under the heading Proof of airbag system check/component replacement in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet.

- The replacement date and mileage must be documented and the booklet must be stamped with the dealer's stamp.

1. Lift up airbag unit under the dashboard.
2. Plug in and lock the two electric plug connections.

3. Insert the airbag unit into the dashboard from below and position it.
4. Fit the airbag unit using the six fastening screws -2- and tighten by hand.

5. First, tighten the two fastening screws -1- for the L-bracket on the support frame to => Tightening torque: 8 Nm (6 ftlb.).

6. Secure the airbag unit by tightening the six fastening screws -2- on the dashboard to => Tightening torque: 8 Nm (6 ftlb.).

Subsequent work

1. Install glove box. -> 681519 Removing and installing glove box - section on "Installing" 681519 Removing and installing glove compartment
2. Connect the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery
