Pinpoint Test L: The Satellite Radio Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly - Vehicles With External Satellite Radio Receiver

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 130 (Escape/Mariner, Escape Hybrid/Mariner Hybrid), Audio System/Navigation for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

Digital signals are received by the satellite radio antenna and sent to the Satellite Digital Audio Receiver System (SDARS) module. The digital audio signals are converted to analog and sent to the Audio Control Module (ACM) (vehicles without the SYNC system) or the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (vehicles with the SYNC system). For vehicles with the SYNC system, the audio signals are sent to the ACM from the APIM.

When a satellite radio subscription is activated, the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) of the SDARS module is associated with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). As a result, the SDARS module cannot be swapped from one vehicle to another.

In order for the satellite radio system to operate, messages are sent from the Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) to the ACM and the SDARS module when a button is pressed. The ACM or SDARS module responds with the appropriate function. The SDARS module also sends messages to the Front Display Interface Module (FDIM) in order to display satellite radio information on the display screen.

If there is an open in the satellite radio antenna circuit, there will be no satellite audio. The audio system display indicates a satellite antenna concern (the method varies according to the type of ACM) when the audio system is operated in satellite radio mode. To diagnose an open in the satellite radio antenna circuit, Go To Pinpoint Test M. Pinpoint Test M: Poor Reception/Poor Sound Quality/No Sound - Satellite Radio

U0184-U0255:

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Subscription status
- Audio system concern
- SDARS module

PINPOINT TEST L: THE SATELLITE RADIO IS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY - VEHICLES WITH EXTERNAL SATELLITE RADIO RECEIVER

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

-------------------------------------------------
L1 VERIFY AN ACTIVE SUBSCRIPTION

- Operate the audio system in satellite radio mode and observe the display.
- Does the display indicate the subscription has expired?

Yes
The subscription has expired. INFORM the customer to contact Sirius to re-activate the subscription.

No
If the display indicates a satellite antenna fault, Go To Pinpoint Test M. Pinpoint Test M: Poor Reception/Poor Sound Quality/No Sound - Satellite Radio

Otherwise, GO to L2.

-------------------------------------------------
L2 CHECK FOR SDARS MODULE DTCs

- Clear the SDARS module DTCs.
- Ignition OFF.
- Ignition ON.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Carry out the SDARS module self-test.
- Is DTC B1031 or DTC B1032 present?

Yes
Go To Pinpoint Test M. Pinpoint Test M: Poor Reception/Poor Sound Quality/No Sound - Satellite Radio

No
GO to L3.

-------------------------------------------------
L3 CHECK THE AUDIO SYSTEM OPERATION

- Operate the audio system in radio tuner (AM/FM) mode.
- Observe the display on the FDIM.
- Do the audio system and display operate correctly in radio tuner (AM/FM) mode?

Yes
GO to L4.

No
GO to Symptom Chart - General Audio System. Symptom Chart - General Audio System

-------------------------------------------------
L4 CHECK FOR CORRECT SDARS MODULE OPERATION

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the SDARS module connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the SDARS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new SDARS module. REFER to Satellite Digital Audio Receiver System (SDARS) Module Service and Repair.
TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
