Thermostat Housing: Service and Repair

Thermostat Housing - 3.5L Ti-VCT

Material(s)

NOTICE: The cooling system is filled with Motorcraft(R) Specialty Green Engine Coolant. Always fill the cooling system with the manufacturer's specified coolant. Chemically flush the cooling system if a non-specified coolant has been used. REFER to Cooling System Flushing. Failure to follow these instructions may damage the engine or cooling system Cooling System Flushing.

NOTICE: Use Motorcraft(R) Specialty Green Engine Coolant. Use the same type of coolant that was originally used to fill the cooling system. Do not mix coolant types. Mixing coolant types degrades the coolant corrosion protection and may damage the engine or cooling system.

NOTICE: Motorcraft(R) Specialty Green Engine Coolant is very sensitive to light. Do NOT allow this product to be exposed to ANY LIGHT for more than a day or two. Extended light exposure causes this product to degrade.

Removal

1. Drain the cooling system. REFER to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding.

2. Remove the ACL (Air Cleaner) outlet tube. REFER to Intake Air System Components - Exploded View [1][2]Diagrams.

3. Release the clamps, disconnect the 5 coolant hoses from the thermostat housing and position them aside.

4. Remove the 2 thermostat housing bolts.

5. NOTE: Do not pull the other end of the coolant tube out of the engine block when separating the thermostat housing.

Separate the thermostat housing from the coolant tube and remove the thermostat housing.

- Remove and discard the thermostat housing-to-coolant tube O-ring seal and the thermostat housing gasket.

Installation

1. Install a new thermostat housing-to-coolant inlet pipe O-ring seal and lubricate it with clean engine coolant.

2. Install a new thermostat housing gasket, the thermostat and the 2 bolts.

3. Tighten the 2 thermostat housing bolts in 2 stages.

- Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

- Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.

4. Connect the 5 coolant hoses to the thermostat housing and position the clamp.

5. Install the ACL (Air Cleaner) outlet pipe. REFER to Intake Air System Components - Exploded View [1][2]Diagrams.

6. Fill and bleed the cooling system. REFER to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding.
